About this position


The Directional Drill Operator is responsible for operating horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment to install underground telecommunications infrastructure, including fiber optic cable and conduit. This position plays a critical role in safely completing bores in residential, commercial, and roadway environments while maintaining strict compliance with safety and utility protection standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate horizontal directional drill (HDD) equipment in various soil conditions.

  • Perform daily equipment inspections and basic maintenance.

  • Read and interpret utility locates, construction prints, and bore plans.

  • Coordinate closely with the Drill Locator to ensure proper bore path and depth.

  • Ensure compliance with 811 utility locate requirements.

  • Safely expose existing utilities (potholing/daylighting) as needed.

  • Maintain bore logs and required documentation.

  • Adhere to all company, OSHA, and safety regulations.

  • Restore job sites upon completion (backfill, tamping, cleanup).

  • Communicate effectively with crew members, supervisors, and property owners.

Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience operating directional drilling equipment (Vermeer, Ditch Witch, etc.).

  • Experience in underground telecom/fiber installation.

  • Strong understanding of utility locates and damage prevention practices.

  • Ability to read and interpret construction prints.

  • Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred, if applicable).

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

  • Ability to lift 75+ lbs and perform physical labor as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with mud mixing systems and drilling fluid management.

  • Knowledge of bore planning and soil conditions.

  • Experience working in high-traffic or DOT-regulated environments.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged standing and operating equipment.

  • Ability to work in trenches and confined areas.

  • Frequent bending, lifting, kneeling, and climbing.

  • Exposure to outdoor elements.

Safety Expectations

  • Maintain a strong safety-first mindset.

  • Conduct daily Job Hazard Analysis (JHA).

  • Wear required PPE at all times.

  • Immediately report any utility strike or unsafe condition.

  • Stop work if unsafe conditions are identified.
