Die Cutter Operator Job Description (Labeling Industry)
Department: Production
Reports To: Production Supervisor/Manager
I. Summary/Objective
The Die Cutter Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining die-cutting equipment to produce high-quality self-adhesive labels and flexible packaging materials according to customer specifications, production schedules, and quality standards. This role requires technical skill, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety and efficiency.
II. Essential Functions & Responsibilities
- Equipment Operation: Set up, operate, and troubleshoot rotary and/or semi-rotary die cutting equipment (e.g., ABG, Delta, Spartanics) used in the production of finished labels and flexible packaging.
- Setup and Changeovers: Perform efficient and accurate machine changeovers, including mounting and aligning flexible dies, setting matrix removal systems, and adjusting tension controls for various substrates (paper, film, foils).
- Quality Control: Continuously monitor the die-cutting process to ensure labels are cut accurately, matrix waste is removed cleanly, and the final product meets specified tolerances, registration, and quality standards.
- Inspection: Perform in-process quality checks, utilizing tools like rulers, micrometers, and vision systems, to detect defects, including incomplete cuts, inaccurate kiss cuts, and inconsistent edge quality.
- Maintenance: Perform routine preventive maintenance on the die cutter, including cleaning, lubrication, and basic repair of equipment to ensure optimal machine performance and longevity.
- Material Handling: Load and unload raw materials (printed rolls) and finished product rolls, ensuring correct material usage and minimizing waste.
- Documentation: Accurately complete all necessary production paperwork, including job tickets, quality logs, waste reports, and maintenance logs.
- Safety & Compliance: Adhere to all company safety policies and procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and following Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures when required.
III. Work Hours & Schedule
- Standard Shift: Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM (Full-Time).
- Flexibility Required: The candidate must be willing and able to work mandatory overtime (OT) as needed, which may include extended daily hours or occasional weekends, based on production demands.
- Shift Changes: Ability to transition to a second shift or other rotational schedules if required by changes in the company's long-term production needs.
IV. Qualifications & Skills
Required
- Experience: Minimum of 2-3 years of experience operating die-cutting equipment, preferably within the label, flexible packaging, or printing industry.
- Mechanical Aptitude: Strong mechanical skills and the ability to read and interpret job specifications, blueprints, and production orders.
- Attention to Detail: Exceptional attention to detail, especially concerning measurement, alignment, and quality inspection.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for extended periods, lift and/or move materials up to 50 lbs, and perform repetitive tasks.
- Communication: Basic mathematical skills and good verbal/written communication skills in English to coordinate with team members and supervisors.
Preferred
- Experience with specific equipment brands (e.g., Comco, Mark Andy, Gallus, ABG International).
- Knowledge of various self-adhesive label materials and substrates.
- Forklift certification or experience operating a pallet jack.
V. Work Environment
- Industrial production environment; noise levels may require hearing protection.
- Exposure to ink, solvents, and other production materials (PPE provided).
