Job Summary

 The Head Start Maintenance Worker is responsible for ensuring the safe, clean, and well-maintained condition of Head Start facilities, grounds, and equipment. This position performs a variety of maintenance tasks to support a healthy and functional learning environment for preschool children and staff, adhering to Head Start Performance Standards, safety regulations, and agency policies


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to buildings, including but not limited to:
  1. Carpentry (minor repairs to doors, windows, walls, furniture)
  2. Plumbing (unclogging drains, fixing minor leaks)
  3. Electrical (replacing light bulbs, resetting breakers)
  4. Painting (touch-ups, small painting projects)
  5. Flooring (minor repairs to tiles, carpets)
  • Maintain the cleanliness and upkeep of building interiors, including classrooms, offices, restrooms, and common areas. This may involve sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and trash removal
  • Maintain the exterior grounds, including but not limited to:
  1. Lawn care (mowing, trimming, weeding as needed)
  2. Snow removal and ice control on walkways and parking areas, ensuring safety for children and staff
  3. Maintaining playground safety by inspecting equipment and performing minor repairs
  4. General tidiness of outdoor areas, including trash and debris removal
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on program equipment, such as furniture, appliances, and playground structures
  • Ensure equipment is in safe and working order
  • Report any major equipment malfunctions or repair needs to the supervisor
  • Assist with the setup and breakdown of equipment for events and activities
  • Adhere to all safety regulations, Head Start Performance Standards related to facility maintenance, and agency policies and procedures
  • Communicate effectively with Center Directors, staff, and supervisors regarding maintenance needs and completed work
  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests

Other Requirements

  • Must pass a criminal background check and other required clearances
  • Valid Massachusetts driver's license and reliable transportation (may be required for travel between sites)

Schedule

  • Monday-Friday
  • 3PM-5PM

 Hourly Rate: $19 per hour


Knowledge, Skills and abilities

  • Ability to use hand and power tools safely and effectively
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting (up to [Specify weight limit, e.g., 50 lbs]), bending, stooping, and standing for extended periods
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining a safe and clean environment
  • Good problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Experience working in a childcare or educational setting is a plus

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • 1-3 years of proven experience in general maintenance and repair work (e.g., building maintenance, handyman experience)
  • Basic knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and painting
