Description:
A Varsity Coach at Worcester Academy, a private independent boarding school, is an educator and mentor who uses athletics to promote the school's mission and develop student-athletes. This role extends beyond the ice, field, court, or pool, requiring a commitment to the students' academic, emotional, and social growth.
The Varsity Coach reports to the Athletic Director.
Key responsibilities
1. Athletic instruction and leadership
- Training and strategy: Develop and implement comprehensive practice plans and game strategies that focus on skill development, physical conditioning, and teamwork.
- Athlete development: Provide expert instruction on the techniques, rules, and strategies of the sport. Evaluate and provide constructive feedback on individual athlete performance.
- Game management: Make decisions about strategy, substitutions, and plays during competitions, providing direction and motivation to athletes.
- Safety protocols: Emphasize and enforce safety standards to ensure a safe physical environment for practices and games.
- Equipment: Oversee the proper care, maintenance, and inventory of team equipment, supplies, and uniforms.
2. Student-athlete mentorship and development
- Character development: Uphold and promote the highest standards of sportsmanship, respect, and ethical conduct. Use the athletic program as a vehicle for teaching life skills like discipline, perseverance, and resilience.
- Academic support: Monitor student-athletes' academic performance and work with the Athletic Director and academic staff to ensure eligibility requirements are met and that athletes maintain high academic standards.
- Role model: Serve as a positive and responsible role model for student-athletes both on and off the field, reinforcing school values. Represent the school and what it stands for positively at public events.
- Maintain mature and age-appropriate judgment and boundaries.
- Communication: Communicate regularly and effectively with students, parents, and other school staff regarding team news, practice schedules, and policies.
3. Administrative and operational duties
- Scheduling: Work with the Athletic Director to schedule practices, games, and team travel.
- Logistics: Manage and supervise all aspects of team travel, including transportation and overnight trips, ensuring student safety and adherence to school policy.
- Budgeting and fundraising: Work with the Athletic Director to manage the team's budget and coordinate any fundraising activities.
- Compliance: Ensure the program follows all league, conference, and state regulations, as well as the school's Code of Conduct.
Required qualifications and characteristics
- Education and experience: A bachelor's degree is preferred, though not always required for part-time, seasonal coaches. Significant experience coaching or playing at the high school or collegiate level is desired.
- Certifications: CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications are required.
- Skills: Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills. The ability to effectively teach, motivate, and mentor student-athletes from diverse backgrounds is essential.
- Personal qualities: A genuine passion for education and a deep commitment to the school's mission are paramount. The ideal candidate is dedicated, reliable, and possesses a resilient, positive attitude.
