Generator Installer Apprentice – Job Description
The Generator Installer Apprentice assists with the installation and setup of residential home standby generator systems (Kohler and Generac only). This entry-level role is designed for individuals developing technical skills in electrical and mechanical systems while learning safe and efficient generator installation practices under the guidance of experienced technicians.
This position requires mechanical aptitude, a willingness to learn, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Training will begin with the gas installation portion of generator projects before progressing into electrical system integration and full installation responsibilities.
The ideal candidate will have prior experience or exposure to gas pipe fitting, plumbing, construction, or fuel system installation, though formal training will be provided.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assist in the installation of Kohler and Generac home standby generators in accordance with manufacturer specifications and safety standards.
- Support site assessments to determine proper installation locations and ensure compliance with local building codes and regulations.
- Assist with installation and connection of gas piping systems (natural gas and/or propane) in accordance with applicable codes and safety requirements.
- Participate in pressure testing and inspection of gas lines to verify safety and compliance.
- Assist with installation and connection of automatic transfer switches, circuit breakers, and required electrical wiring components as training progresses.
- Work alongside senior installers during inspections and coordination with local inspectors and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).
- Learn and follow manufacturer specifications, company standards, and local code requirements.
- Provide support during customer walkthroughs and basic operational overviews upon project completion.
- Collaborate with project managers and installation teams to ensure timely and efficient project completion.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in accordance with company safety policies and procedures.
- Document work performed, installation details, and inspections using company software or required forms.
Skills and Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of one (1) year of construction or related field experience preferred.
- Previous experience in electrical, mechanical, or generator installation is preferred but not required.
- Basic understanding of electrical systems and safety practices, or willingness to learn through on-the-job training.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and blueprints.
- Ability to follow instructions, learn new skills, and work effectively with limited supervision as training progresses.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Physical ability to lift and carry heavy equipment (up to 100 lbs., with assistance when required).
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
- Electrical certifications or apprentice-level licensing are a plus.
- OSHA safety certifications are a plus.
- Experience with gas pipe fitting, plumbing, or fuel system installation strongly preferred.
