Position Overview

The Safety and Quality Manager is responsible for overseeing the safety of our employee-owners and quality of our work. The Safety Manager will plan, direct, implement, and oversee aspects of the company’s Safety & Quality programs, processes, data systems, management system, Maturity Path assessments and training processes, all designed to help ensure a safe, healthy and accident-free and quality incident-free -work environment.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Systems, Structure and Culture: Plans and implements safety management systems, policies and procedures for compliance and risk prevention, meeting federal, state, county and local rules and regulations. Programs are designed for field, shop and office operations and environments.
  • Seek sustained incident prevention solutions by incorporating S&Q issues and consideration into the business processes, built into the management system and consistent with the Maturity Path assessment.
  • AS part of the Management system, administers company Injury & Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) and project specific Accident Prevention Plan (APP)
  • Remains current on federal, state, county and local safety regulations. Keep management informed of new or revised regulations and their projected impact
  • DOT: Partners with Fleet to identify and resolve gaps in DOT compliance, related training programs and safe practices and logs.
  • Site Plans: Working with the Company Safety leaders and branch leaders, develops and implements site / project specific safety plans. reflective of the Maturity path results, cultural goals and unique business and branch needs.
  • Risk Reduction: Works with the field and safety leaders to develops pre-job hazard analysis to prepare for construction. Improves reduction of job hazards and ensure a safe working environment through corrective actions targeting causes of incidents.
  • Incident Investigations: Conducts accident, injury, unsafe work condition investigations. Assists in identifying causes of unsafe conditions and injury cases and claims information
  • Training: Plans and implement programs to provide compliance and risk prevention training, as needed, for branch managers, superintendents, foremen and crews, and office admin support staff. Risk identification, safe practices, safe equipment operating techniques and emergency response for job sites and office environments. Conducts, assists and coordinates above training. Track training in PRSH LMS, teaming with HR
  • Audits: Performs construction site audits and provide recommendations for hazard abatement. Supports other field safety staff in ensuring each construction project is conducting operations in a safe manner for the protection of our employees, clients, subcontractors and the public
  • Contractors: Partnering with project management and branch leaders, develops consistent subcontractor selection, retention criteria and process for providing/ensuring required training upon selection and prior to beginning work. Provides or trains others to provide safety mentoring to sub-contractors
  • Corporate Contact: Coordinating with the Director of S&Q, acts as the corporate contact for any federal, state or municipal safety or risk management authority and / or personnel, including but not limited to OSHA. Represents the organization in community or industry safety groups and programs
  • Incentives: Implements / oversees safety incentive programs, by teaming with HR and incorporating S&Q considerations into the recognition, reward, incentive and discipline processes.
  • Metrics: Assist in data analysis and trends, by partnering with HR and Fleet on mutual metrics and analysis.
  • New Hire orientation: Develops a process to ensure new hire orientations are done timely and and / or assists with new hire orientation and safety meetings
  • Workers’ Compensation: Teams with HR to ensures compliance with corporate worker’s compensation program including working with internal personnel and 3rd party administrators / legal counsel to effectively investigate and resolve claims in a cost-effective manner
  • Return to Work: Team with HR to identify appropriate light duty jobs, facilitates early return to work responsibilities for injured workers and provide meaningful light duty transitional opportunities
  • Travel to various job sites as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Safety, Occupational Health or related field
  • 15 years leadership in Safety or quality positions
  • Includes 10 years’ experience in a construction or related safety environment field required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA, MSHA, DOT and other state and federal agency guidelines
  • Proficient in MS Office suite
  • Working knowledge of Six sigma tools and ISO 45000 Management Systems a plus
  • Periodic travel to job sites and other venues. Valid CA Driver License and good driving record
