Temporary Highway Maintenance Worker I

About this position

ABOUT THE ROLE:

Under supervision of the County Road Superintendent and County Engineer, is responsible for performing general labor-type duties, hand and power tool operation, and intermediate level truck and equipment operation on various road and bridge projects. 


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provides assistance to highway maintenance crew with general labor duties.
  2. Asphalt patching, flagging, hand grading and weed cutting. 
  3. Operate tractors equipped with mowers, disks and other attachment; operate other light and medium duty equipment including pavers, compactors and loaders. 
  4. Perform preventative maintenance and upkeep of equipment. 
  5. Observe established safety practices and procedures when working with equipment.
  6. Perform other duties as required and assigned. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT & CONDITIONS:

This position will involve working outdoors in all extremes of climate and weather conditions. This is a temporary, seasonal position ending approximately October 2026. Will work 10-hour shifts or longer with possibility of overtime. May also work less than 40 hours per week dependent upon workload criteria and/or weather conditions.

Salary Information

$19.27 - $21.38 Hourly Wage

Requirements

  • Requires two (2) years of experience in the operation of variable types of highway maintenance tools and equipment, and general labor skills. 
  • Applicant must be 18 years of age or above with a valid Class D driver's license and a clean driving record. 
  • Candidates must successfully complete a standard background and criminal record check along with an alcohol and controlled substance test and physical exam. Costs associated with these exams will be paid for by the County.
