JOB SUMMARY

The Accounting Intern will support the Finance Department by assisting with payroll-related tasks, invoice reconciliation, financial reporting, and other general accounting functions. Under the supervision of the Comptroller, the intern will gain hands-on experience in fund accounting, payroll systems, and financial documentation, while learning how to operate in a mission-driven nonprofit environment. This internship is ideal for students pursuing a degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with preparing and reviewing payroll-related reports prior to final processing
  • Support reconciliation of benefit invoices with payroll deductions under supervision
  • Help identify discrepancies in balance sheet accounts and prepare documentation for variance explanations
  • Support filing and documentation of payroll and benefits-related records
  • Assist in compiling audit and grant support documentation such as employee headcounts and payroll summaries
  • Participate in data entry, report formatting, and spreadsheet maintenance (Excel)
  • Communicate with Human Resources and Accounting staff to verify employee data and resolve minor discrepancies
  • Shadow payroll processing, including imports from external systems like LASRS and FileBound
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Non-essential)

  • Adhere to the designated dress code as stipulated for the specific role.
  • Maintain an organized workspace and adhere to office confidentiality standards
  • Attend internal finance team meetings or trainings as directed
  • Provide administrative support for scanning, filing, and document review

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

This position requires knowledge, skills and abilities equivalent to:

 

  • Actively pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Basic knowledge of accounting principles (GAAP) and financial documentation
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel (including formulas, tables, and sorting/filtering)
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Professional communication and time management skills
  • Availability to work at least 10–15 hours per week on-site (flexible based on academic schedule)
