Summary
Greenhill School seeks a qualified and compassionate Substitute Nurse to provide student health services on an as-needed basis in the absence of the full-time nursing staff. The Substitute Nurse is responsible for supporting the daily health and wellness needs of students, including providing care for acute illness or injury, administering medications, maintaining accurate health records, and ensuring compliance with established health protocols.
This individual must be knowledgeable of best practices in school nursing and willing to comply with established procedures and protocols in caring for students with chronic and acute illnesses or injuries that arise during the school day. The Substitute Nurse will communicate as appropriate with families, divisional staff, administrators, athletic trainers, and members of the Student Health Services team.
This is an hourly, non-exempt, substitute position with assignments scheduled on an as-needed basis.
Responsibilities
Student Care and Health Services
- Provide routine care, treatment, and monitoring for students presenting with illness or injury
- Assess student health concerns and deliver appropriate medical care, intervention, and education
- Administer medications in accordance with physician orders and school policies, including classroom delivery when needed
- Implement first aid measures and follow Emergency Response protocols
- Support students with chronic health conditions in accordance with care plans
Health Records and Communication
- Maintain accurate health documentation, including medication administration records and visit logs
- Ensure compliance with established procedures, protocols, and immunization requirements
- Communicate pertinent health information to families and appropriate school personnel
- Refer students and families for follow-up medical care when appropriate
Operational Support
- Maintain organization and readiness of the nursing office and supplies
- Assist with preparation of documentation and supplies for student trips, as needed
- Collaborate with divisional offices, faculty, and staff to support student health and safety
- Support the Director of Student Health Services and nursing team in maintaining a safe and healthy school environment
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
Required:
- Current Texas State Registered Nurse (RN) License
- Current CPR certification
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited college or university
- Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment
Preferred:
- 3–5 years of nursing experience, preferably in pediatric, school, or community health settings
- Experience working with children and adolescents
- Proficiency with computers and standard office and medical documentation systems
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Work is performed in a school health office and throughout the campus environment
- Must be able to stand, walk, and move throughout the campus during the school day
- Must be able to lift and assist students, when necessary, and respond to medical emergencies
- May require occasional bending, kneeling, or reaching while providing care
- Must be able to respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations
Schedule and Availability
This is a substitute, as-needed position. Assignments may be scheduled in advance or on short notice to provide coverage during nurse absences, school events, or other staffing needs. School hours are generally between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
