Job Overview:
The Director of Operational Intelligence & Automation position will lead a transformative digital operations initiative across all core enterprise value streams. This strategic leadership role will drive the optimization and digitization of end-to-end processes that power our business. The mission is to reduce project cycle times, improve predictability and agility in field operations, and build a data-driven, nimble enterprise. In this role, you will build and lead a small internal Automation & Intelligence team dedicated to developing workflow automation tools, real-time operational dashboards, and event-driven orchestration of work – all designed with a “Human-in-the-Loop” philosophy where automation amplifies (not replaces) our teams’ decision-making.
As Director, you will work cross-functionally to streamline how information flows from initial concept through project delivery and cash collection. This role is both a visionary and hands-on builder/operator position.
Key Responsibilities and Essential Tasks
- Digitize Enterprise Value Streams
- Convert each value stream into clear, standardized digital workflows with defined steps, owners, entry/exit criteria, and exception handling.
- Ensure value stream maps reflect “how work actually happens”, not idealized process charts.
- Create a consistent operating language across the enterprise (shared definitions, statuses, and events).
- Define the operational data model that underpins all downstream automation and analytics
- Define and execute the Automation Architecture (Human-in-the-Loop)
- Design and deploy workflow automation that eliminates manual coordination—approvals, quality loops, releases, routing, notifications, escalations, and exception loops.
- Ensure every automation includes human accountability: an owner, an override, and a visible audit trail.
- Establish automation standards including version control, testing, monitoring, and rollback procedures which do not add complexity.
- Manage the build-vs-buy decision rigorously: default to configuring and integrating proven platforms before building custom solutions
- Build Operational Intelligence & Predictability
- Coordinate with IT to architect and implement a governed operational data layer -whether a data warehouse, lakehouse, or governed reporting layer on existing systems.
- Build leader dashboards and scorecards that measure cycle time, variability, bottlenecks, rework loops, and handoff delays.
- Make performance visibility actionable by embedding it into weekly operating rhythms and leader decision-making.
- Improve schedule reliability by turning workflow signals into proactive intervention.
- Lead Applied AI Initiatives
- Identify and prioritize AI use cases with clear operational ROI -e.g., document classification and extraction (submittals, RFIs, change orders), predictive scheduling based on historical project data, or automated anomaly detection in cost/schedule variance.
- Lead an internal cross-functional team for AI piloting with time-boxed experiments, defined success metrics, and documented kill criteria.
- Establish AI governance guardrails: model validation, bias review, transparency requirements, data privacy compliance, and employee engagement protocols.
- Ensure AI deployments integrate with existing workflows rather than creating parallel systems.
- Lead Controlled Experimentation and Smart Risk
- Run time-boxed pilots with clear success criteria and “kill rules.”
- Take controlled, reversible risks to discover step-change improvements without disrupting active project delivery.
- Document learnings and scale what works.
- Build and Lead the Automation & Intelligence Team
- As needed hire and lead a small, high-leverage team (process, data, automation) that ships improvements continuously.
- Define the sourcing model: which capabilities are built in-house vs. augmented through consultants, managed services, or vendor professional services.
- Own the departmental budget for tooling, vendor engagements, and contractor support.
- Partner across Ops, Finance, HR, IT, Supply Chain, Prefab, Precon, and field leadership to drive adoption and reduce tool sprawl.
- Change Management & Adoption
- Lead change management to ensure new workflows and tools are adopted across field, prefab, and office teams.
- Build role-based training, communications, and feedback loops so adoption is practical and sustainable.
- Track adoption and retire “shadow systems” (spreadsheets, email-based workflows) through measurable conversion plans.
- Success Metrics
- Measurable reduction in cycle time and handoff delays across value streams within the first 12 months.
- Operational data platform established with documented data model, quality standards, and governance.
- Automation platform selected, implemented, and delivering measurable reduction in manual coordination.
- Adoption of standardized digital workflows by project and support teams (measured by active usage, not just deployment).
- AI pilots delivering measurable operational improvement with documented ROI.
- Improved schedule predictability (lower variance, fewer reactive escalations).
- Team hired and operating with clear charter, roadmap, and stakeholder engagement model.

Compensation:
Rex Moore pays hourly/salary rates commensurate with each employee’s knowledge, experience and skill level.
Work environment:
Work is performed in an office environment at one of our office locations. This position requires to travel to other office locations and jobsites.
LOCATION:
Rex Moore and affiliated offices are located throughout California and Nevada. This position requires frequent travel to the many locations and is flexible in its designate location.
