Position Summary
The RN is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care across all age groups. This role may function as a charge nurse, providing leadership and supervision to LVNs, CNAs, and other clinical staff during assigned shifts. The RN collaborates with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to ensure safe, efficient, and effective patient care.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Patient Care & Clinical Practice
- Perform comprehensive patient assessments and reassessments for all populations.
- Administer medications, IV therapy, blood products, and treatments per hospital policy.
- Monitor and manage patient pain and clinical status, reporting significant changes promptly.
- Accurately document assessments, care plans, patient education, and discharge planning.
- Assist with procedures and perform technical skills such as EKG monitoring and waived testing.
- Serve as a clinical resource and role model during routine care and emergencies.
Patient Safety & Quality
- Maintain a safe care environment and adhere to infection prevention and safety protocols.
- Report and document incidents, hazards, and adverse events.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes.
Teamwork & Operations
- Collaborate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams.
- Utilize downtime productively, including unit support, supply management, and special projects.
- Demonstrate working knowledge of unit equipment and report maintenance needs.
- Ensure appropriate use and charging of supplies and medications.
Leadership & Professional Development
- As charge nurse, assign and supervise staff to ensure appropriate workload and patient coverage.
- Lead by example during emergencies and critical situations.
- Provide constructive feedback and participate in performance improvement efforts.
- Maintain licensure, certifications, and ongoing education to support professional growth.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational operations.
Qualifications
Education & Licensure
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program (BSN preferred).
- Current Texas RN license.
- Current BLS certification required; ACLS, PALS, and NALS preferred.
- Successful completion of hospital competency testing (medication administration, IV therapy, EKG).
Experience & Skills
- Minimum of one year of general nursing experience required.
- Emergency or acute care experience preferred.
- Strong clinical judgment, organization, and multitasking skills.
- Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
- Basic computer skills and experience with electronic health records (EHR).
Physical & Work Requirements
- Ability to lift, push, pull, and assist patients and equipment.
- Prolonged standing, walking, bending, and repetitive motions required.
- Exposure to clinical environments with infectious materials; safety protocols required.
