About this position
The Dockmaster is a front-line, member-facing position responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, and daily oversight of the Club's waterfront, docks, and Club-owned fleet. Reporting to the Harbormaster and Facilities Director, this role supports all waterfront activities, adult and junior sailing programs, and ensures a safe, organized, and welcoming harbor environment. A friendly, professional demeanor is essential, as the Dockmaster interacts daily with members and serves as a primary point of contact for waterfront activities.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee dock and harbor operations with a focus on safety, organization, and member experience.
- Assist members with boat movements, docking, launching, hauling, and general waterfront needs.
- Enforce dock rules and safety policies clearly, calmly, and consistently.
- Maintain clean, orderly, and well-functioning docks, floats, and waterfront equipment.
- Oversee the maintenance, readiness, and repair of the Club-owned powerboat and sailboat fleet.
- Conduct regular vessel inspections and proactively identify maintenance or repair needs.
- Perform or coordinate basic engine work, rigging adjustments, fueling, and systems troubleshooting.
- Support adult and junior sailing programs, regattas, races, and special waterfront events.
- Assist with on-water supervision, rescues, towing, and safety response as needed.
- Supervise and mentor seasonal dock staff, promoting professionalism, seamanship, and safety awareness.
- Collaborate with the Harbormaster, Facilities team, Sailing staff, and other Club departments.
- Assist with special projects and perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Strong boating and seamanship experience required.
- Working knowledge of small boat engines, marine systems, and rigging.
- New Jersey Boating Safety Certificate required.
- Experience in waterfront, marina, or sailing program operations preferred.
- Ability to remain calm and decisive in changing weather and water conditions.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a member-service mindset.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Valid driver’s license required.
Physical & Schedule Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and handle boating equipment and gear.
- Comfort working on docks, boats, and in/on the water.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and during special events as required.
