About this position

Position Summary: The Curatorial Assistant provides administrative support to the curatorial department and to the Deputy Director, Collections & Curatorial Strategies. This individual is responsible for organizing and maintaining internal and external correspondence related to collections, answering basic research questions, interacting with visiting scholars, donors, and consultants., The curatorial assistant participates in the research and interpretation of the Museum’s global art collections and assists and supports exhibition development and implementation. This is a full-time position reporting directly to the Deputy Director of Collections & Curatorial.

Salary: $50,000 annually; includes a comprehensive organization-sponsored benefits package including medical plan, dental plan, vision, life insurance, Pension, 401K retirement, and generous paid time off.

Schedule: Hybrid - 3 days a week onsite / 2 remote

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides administrative support for the Curatorial Department
  • Provides support to Deputy Director, Collections & Curatorial Strategies
  • Handles incoming and outgoing correspondence and interoffice and external mail for the Department.
  • Coordinates all incoming offered gifts for curatorial review and related correspondence.
  • Assists curators with exhibitions and collections-related projects, including long-term plans for collection rotations, creating, and updating checklists and production schedules, and collaborating on interpretive materials.
  • Working with curators and collections management, coordinates and hosts visiting scholars and curators and other study visits
  • Conducts research related to the Museum’s main collecting areas: African, American, Asian, and Decorative Arts
  • Serves as liaison with prospective donors to the collection and with consultants as needed.
  • Schedules curatorial departmental meetings and other project meetings
  • Handles photocopying and scanning of collections-related materials.
  • Working with the Deputy Director, Collections & Curatorial Strategies, prepares and manages Curatorial Department budget.
  • Working with the Deputy Director, coordinates Acquisitions & Collections Committee meetings and related materials
  • Supports and may contribute to digital programming content.
  • Contributes to updating Collections Management System (TMS) and uses TMS to support collection research requested by the public and other departments.
  • Serves as point person for special exhibitions and other collection related projects.
  • Assists with NMOA’s social media program, researching, drafting, and editing exhibitions and collections-related content for social media posts.
  • Researching and writing catalog essays about artworks for exhibition catalogs, including correspondence, photographs, audio recordings, and other documentation

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):

  • B.A. degree preferably in Art History, Museum Studies, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience is desired.
  • Some experience in a museum, gallery, or visual arts setting preferred; experience working with objects or archives a plus.
  • Familiarity with basic museum systems and practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and written skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Must be punctual, dependable, and have excellent communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required.
