Position Summary:

The Phlebotomist works under the direct supervision of the Director of Laboratory Services or applicable Senior Technologist. Ultimate responsibility is to the Director of Laboratory Services. This position performs computer functions, phlebotomy functions, clerical functions, specimen processing functions, order entry, result reporting and other data entry.  Performs other duties as assigned.


Job Duties & Responsibilities: 

  •  Obtain blood specimens by performing venipunctures and capillary (fingerstick and heelstick) collections.  Therapeutic phlebotomies may also be required. 
  • Follow standard operating procedures for proper identification of patients, specimen collection, labeling and handling.
  • Follow standard operating procedure for ordering tests. Obtain complete and correct information from patients and clients for the purpose of ordering laboratory tests. Accepts verbal orders per laboratory policy and obtains additional information when necessary.
  • Verifies that requisitions have complete information to include source facility, doctor and test requested.
  • Possess knowledge of specimen requirement, sample volumes, testing minimums in relation to the tests ordered.
  • Answer phones, navigate computer system, and specimen processing responsibilities as necessary.
  • Verifies that specimens received in the laboratory/department are correctly labeled.
  • Follows laboratory’s established policies and procedures.
  • Follow laboratory’s established corrective action policies and procedures
  • Demonstrate flexibility in adjusting to variable workload and job duties.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to customer service.
  • Adheres to CCH&HS policies.
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities.
  • Demonstrate willingness to take on additional responsibilities.
Requirements:

Education:

  • High school diploma is required.
  • Two years of college in a science-related field or training as a medical assistant is desirable.
  • Required to meet all personnel requirements for Testing Personnel under CLIA 88.

Licensure/Certification:

  •  Required to have a valid driver’s license.
  • Phlebotomy certification by ASCP or another accrediting agency is desirable.

Experience:

  • Must be able to palpate a vein or artery and possess skills to perform a needlestick.  
  • Must be able to select, enter and retrieve correct information in the Laboratory Information System.  
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.  
  • Must have general knowledge of specimen processing and specimen handling.
