JOB FUNCTION
Under the direct supervision of the Youth and Family Supervisor, the Recreation Aide assists delivery of City recreational programs. This position is responsible for providing continuous, direct supervision of assigned participants and activities, requiring sound judgment, attentiveness, and a degree of independence in day-to-day decision-making.
Work is performed within established lesson plans, program guidelines, and departmental policies, with an emphasis on participant safety, engagement, and positive recreation experiences.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Program Support & Delivery
• Assist in the planning, implementation, and supervision of recreational activities including sports, games, arts and crafts, music, dance, and nature-based programs
• Develop supplemental activities that complement scheduled lesson plans
• Support and participate in team and individual sports, enforcing rules, techniques, and safety standards
• Maintain order, discipline, and safety during all program activities
• Supervise children directly to ensure their health, safety, and well-being
• Assist students with after-school program assignments, projects, and enrichment activities
• Foster social-emotional growth, self-esteem, and positive peer interactions among youth
• Form positive relationships with children and families to support engagement and retention
Facility & Equipment Maintenance
• Participate in cleaning, organizing, and maintaining facilities and equipment
• Ensure program areas are safe, organized, and ready for daily activities
Documentation & Compliance
• Maintain accurate program records including incident/accident reports, attendance logs, and sign-in/sign-out sheets
• Assist in compliance with City, State, and departmental policies and procedures
Community Engagement & Special Events
• Assist with at least two (2) special events per calendar year
• Collaborate with school staff, counselors, and community partners to support programming goals
• Provide a high-quality customer service experience, addressing concerns and questions professionally
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
• Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations
• Ability to provide leadership and guidance to children of all ages
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, staff, and the general public
• Ability to prepare reports and documentation as required
• Knowledge of age-appropriate recreational activities, enrichment programs, and child development principles
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Minimum age of 16
• Experience working with children required; some college preferred, particularly in education, child development, or related fields
• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
• Ability to interact tactfully and effectively with children, families, and the general public
• Must be physically able to actively participate in sports instruction and recreational activities
• Availability to work throughout the summer and school break holidays
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS
• Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing
• Acceptable eyesight and hearing (with or without corrections)
• Ability to lift and/or carry up to 25 pounds
• Ability to walk, stand, bend, push, pull, climb, and participate in physical activities for extended periods
• Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally
• Ability to operate arts and crafts materials and recreational equipment
• Must be able to participate in swimming, kayaking, canoeing, snorkeling, and other physical activities
• Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed for special events
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
• Works in both indoor and outdoor settings
• Subject to variable weather conditions, including heat and direct sunlight
• Work may involve frequent interruptions and active supervision of children
