About this position

What is a Peer Support Specialist? This position assists our Care Coordinators and other team members in developing daily living opportunities for peers with chronic and persistent mental illness and/or substance use. The Peer Support Specialist applies the tools developed in their own recovery as well as the philosophy and values of Intentional Peer Support to collaborate, coach, and build relationships with peers. This position is based out of the Rumford Office, with a service area of Oxford County, is per diem (no guarantee of hours and up to 15 hours per week), and schedule must meet the needs of the peers in the community, including some evenings, occasional weekend coverage, and meeting clients in non-traditional locations. 
 

Essential Duties:

  • Ability to obtain Certified Intentional Peer Support Specialist certification within 12 months of hire
  • Provides ongoing support, care, and conversation to peers and family members when appropriate.
  • Assist peers and staff with daily activities and duties.
  • Participate in planning and problem-solving to assist peers in achieving goals identified in their treatment plan. 
  • Along with staff and peers, participate in skill-building opportunities in community living.

Desired Qualifications: 

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent 
  • Individuals with lived experience of mental health or addiction recovery are encouraged to apply
  • One year of paid or unpaid peer support experience preferred

Other Requirements: Ability to obtain and maintain the Certified Intentional Peer Support Specialist Training Program (CIPSS); Pre-employment background checks: Maine Background Check Center (SBI, Direct Care Worker Registry, Maine and National Sex Offender Registry, fraud, and federal debarment), DHHS- Child and Adult Protective, and DMV must be completed upon offer of hire and as a condition of continued employment; valid driver’s license and travel within the service area is required.
