About the Role: 

The Maintenance Mechanic B is an experienced technician responsible for performing diagnostics, repairs, and preventive maintenance on heavy-duty diesel fleet equipment, including semi-trucks, dry van trailers, roll-off trucks with sliding tarp systems, forklifts, yellow iron, and refuse vehicles. This role works under general supervision and focuses on ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable operation of all fleet equipment. The Maintenance Mechanic B independently troubleshoots mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and diesel engine systems, contributing to maximizing fleet uptime and minimizing operational downtime in a commercial operating environment.

  • Perform routine diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and repairs on diesel engines, brakes, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues independently, escalating complex problems when needed.
  • Complete preventive maintenance services according to manufacturer specifications and company standards.
  • Operate hand and power tools, forklifts, scissor lifts, and other equipment safely.
  • Maintain accurate work orders, maintenance records, and parts usage documentation.
  • Assist with component replacements and adjustments requiring moderate technical knowledge.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, and company safety regulations.
  • Provide guidance to entry-level technicians as needed.
  • Perform other maintenance duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training preferred.
  • 1–3 years of heavy-duty diesel repair or commercial fleet maintenance experience.
  • Proficient in diagnostics and routine repairs on engines, hydraulics, brakes, and electrical systems.
  • Ability to work independently on standard repairs and escalate complex issues appropriately.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Ability to lift up to 75–100 lbs and work in physically demanding shop conditions.

Preferred Job Qualifications: 

  • Experience with semi-trucks, trailers, roll-off trucks, forklifts, and refuse vehicles, etc.
  • Knowledge of OEM preventive maintenance schedules and diagnostic tools.
  • Familiarity with DOT, OSHA, and company safety regulations.
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and time-management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to train or mentor entry-level technicians.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements: 

Normal work environment is a recycling plant, with exposure to all weather conditions, dirt, high levels of noise, smells/odors and at times exposure to dangerous and/or toxic substances requiring necessary precautions, including PPE.

  • Will be exposed to a physical environment, which involves dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes or similar elements most of the workday.
  • Normal setting for this job is material recycle facilities, repair/maintenance facility outdoors or other facilities.
