This position provides important support for all aspects of a comprehensive program of exhibitions, resource management, and audience engagement to serve the mission of the Artspace and the Kansas City Art Institute.
The Artspace Fellowship is an initiative that reflects the Artspace mission to serve the region as a teaching museum by providing important professional development opportunities for promising young artists and art historians. The Artspace Fellow is an essential member of the Artspace team and will make critical and meaningful contributions to the Artspace program while gaining valuable skills to support a future career in the arts.
The Artspace Fellow assists the Director and Manager of Operations + Communications with all aspects of programming and operations. This includes providing support for the organization and presentation of exhibitions, assisting with the permanent collection and the growing Cohen Resource Collection, participating in strategic planning and evaluation, training and mentoring of work-study students and academic interns, and working closely with participating artists and curators. During the second semester, interns have the opportunity to propose and realize an exhibition or special project for the Roger Cohen Resource Room.
Since 2004, the Artspace has offered a paid fellowship which provides a stipend for a selected individual and support for a special project to be realized.
Essential Functional Responsibilities:
- Maintaining the Artspace resource room collection. This includes accessioning new titles, managing the collection database, re-shelving titles, and managing related workflows.
- Providing support for exhibition program(s) as assigned. This includes conducting research, assisting with exhibition preparation and registration activities including receiving and packing artworks, creating condition reports, installation, and public program support.
- Provide support for the stewardship of the Kansas City Art Institute Fine Art Collection as assigned.
- Assisting with the Art on campus program.
- Under the guidance of Artspace staff engages and interacts with students and the general public regarding programs and resources. This may include social media interaction.
- In concert with Artspace staff, update the Artspace’s social media platforms. Coordinate photographic documentation of all Artspace events, programs, and projects for social media publication.

Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications:
- Knowledge of art history and contemporary art.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality as appropriate.
- Ability to interact and work successfully with staff, faculty, and students as related to job responsibilities.
- High level of computer literacy with knowledge of MS Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and Facebook.
- Must have strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Should have the ability to communicate well, both oral and written, with individuals of various backgrounds.
- Must have a pleasant, courteous, and professional attitude and presence.
- Ability to resolve conflicts in a constructive manner.
- Ability to work successfully under the pressure of deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to work with minimum supervision, and to bring projects to conclusion on a timely basis.
REQUIRED/PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Experience with museum/exhibition practices including exhibition design, installation, preparation, packing, and art shipping.
- Preference is given to alumni of the Kansas City Art Institute who are interested in a career in the arts.
