Position Summary

The Plant Systems Technician performs inspection, testing, preventive maintenance, and water treatment monitoring on SIPI’s mechanical and water treatment systems. This role executes OEM-aligned PM tasks, performs required sampling/testing and documentation, and participates in an on-call rotation to support emergency call-back response when assigned.

This role supports a potential contract.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Execute Phase 1 inspection/testing activities, including functional checks, readings, calibration tasks (as applicable), and condition documentation.
  • Perform annual preventive maintenance and water treatment tasks aligned to OEM requirements and applicable standards for boilers, chillers, cooling tower, chemical feed systems, heat exchangers, water softeners, and reverse osmosis systems. 
  • Support water treatment program activities such as closed-loop sampling/testing, chemical dosing verification, and monitoring/log maintenance. 
  • Maintain accurate service documentation: PM/service reports, test results, combustion/calibration logs (as applicable), water quality logs, and supporting attachments (SDS and OEM cut sheets when applicable). 
  • When on call, provide initial response (phone/video consultation or remote assessment) within required timeframes; if an on-site response is necessary, report within required dispatch windows. 
  • Follow safety requirements including SIPI safety orientation, lockout/tagout (LOTO), PPE, and completion of safety checklists before live testing or combustion tasks. 
  • Coordinate daily sequencing and site access needs with the Project Manager.
 

Required Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience performing preventive maintenance and troubleshooting on institutional/commercial boiler and HVAC systems (or comparable mechanical systems). 
  • Licensed/qualified to perform mechanical and water treatment work as applicable to assigned tasks; must maintain any required licenses, certifications, and permits. 
  • Manufacturer/OEM certifications (Aerco, Carrier, RBI, Cascade) or equivalent demonstrated experience for relevant equipment. 
  • Experience with water treatment activities and documentation (sampling/testing, monitoring logs, chemical handling documentation/SDS awareness). 
  • Ability to pass a federal background investigation as required for site access and comply with site security procedures. 
  • Ability to work safely in mechanical spaces and follow required safety practices, including LOTO and PPE. 
 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with chiller oil/refrigerant analysis and/or coordinating specialized testing (e.g., eddy current testing) through authorized resources. 
  • Experience with cooling tower maintenance and water treatment chemical feed systems. 
  • CMMS or work order documentation experience.
 

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • This position is on a federal school campus. Employment is contingent upon successfully completing required background screening and complying with campus access procedures.
  • Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. MST, excluding Federal holidays; flexible as required for outages and coordination
  • Escalation support for emergency call-back events (beginning after completion of Phase 1); coordination with on-call technicians and dispatch
  • Work performed in boiler plant/mechanical rooms and utility spaces; exposure to noise, heat, and moving mechanical components.
  • May require lifting, carrying, climbing, kneeling, and working in tight spaces; PPE required for many tasks.
  • Must be able to safely handle and document chemical usage in accordance with labeling and SDS requirements.
