ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING SUMMER INTERN

Position Summary

The Electrical Engineering Intern works alongside a team of highly skilled engineers to improve the reliability and quality of our electronics designs. You will get hands-on experience designing, testing, and troubleshooting a wide variety of electrical systems and components including printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs), power electronics, electromechanical switches, and more. Primary Responsibilities

  • Perform testing on a variety of PCBAs and electrical components. This will involve working with a wide range of voltages and currents, as well as manipulating a variety of operating conditions including temperature, humidity, etc.
  • Participate in root cause analysis investigations. This will involve performing troubleshooting, collecting and analyzing data, creating clear technical documentation, and suggesting design improvements based on your findings.
  • Participate in the design of a variety of circuitry including power supplies, gate drivers, and digital control boards.
  • Identify opportunities to apply automation to existing operations to streamline the way we work.

Required skills and experience

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related field
  • Strong working understanding of basic electrical properties: AC vs DC, frequency, voltage, current, power, resistance, capacitance, inductance, etc
  • Familiarity with analog and digital circuitry and components
  • Demonstrated experience with test equipment such as function generators, oscilloscopes, voltage and current probes, and DC power supplies
  • Ability to read and understand an electrical schematic
  • Strong skills in written and verbal communication of technical information
  • Eager to learn and solve complex problems
  • Self-motivated with the ability to ask questions when needed
  • Ability to work in a diverse, global team environment
  • Attention to detail and good organizational skills

Desired skills and experience

  • Familiarity with PCBAs: design considerations, best practices, etc
  • Detailed understanding of electrical component functionality: MOSFETs, diodes, transformers, inductors, capacitors, etc.
  • Understanding of various circuit topologies: DC/DC conversion, AC/DC conversion, op-amp circuitry
  • Understanding of the causes and mitigations techniques for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues
  • Experience using an electronic design automation (EDA) tool such as Altium Designer
  • Familiarity with industry standards: IEEE, IPC, JESD


Location

This position is based in-office at our Durham, North Carolina headquarters. The internship is anticipated to span 10–12 weeks during the summer.
