Position Summary
The STORMWERX Research Center at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology is seeking a highly motivated and technically skilled Research Associate to support applied research and development in advanced manufacturing, automation, and emerging production technologies.
This is a hands-on, lab-centered role within a small but rapidly growing research team focused on next-generation manufacturing systems, digital engineering, and technology transition. The ideal candidate is an independent researcher and practitioner who is equally comfortable designing experiments, operating advanced equipment, and collaborating on multidisciplinary research initiatives.
We are particularly interested in candidates with deep practical experience in manufacturing science, engineering, or a closely related field who can contribute immediately to research execution, prototyping, and technical problem-solving.
This is not a purely academic role. We are seeking a hands-on researcher who enjoys working in the lab, operating equipment, and building real systems in advanced manufacturing environments.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct applied research in advanced manufacturing, automation, and related engineering domainsDesign, prototype, and test components and systems using modern manufacturing tools and workflowsOperate and maintain advanced manufacturing equipment and laboratory systemsDevelop CAD models, manufacturing plans, and experimental test setupsSupport and lead technical research tasks across multiple concurrent projectsCollaborate with faculty, students, and external partners on research and development initiativesDocument research findings through technical reports, presentations, and publicationsAssist with proposal development, grant writing, and sponsored research activitiesContribute to the growth and technical direction of the STORMWERX research portfolioRequired Qualifications
PhD in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Materials Science, Robotics, or a closely related field
ORMS degree in a relevant field plus significant hands-on research or industry experienceDemonstrated hands-on research experience in one or more of the following:Additive ManufacturingRobotics & AutomationCNC Manufacturing3D Scanning / MetrologyAdvanced Welding or Hybrid ManufacturingProficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Creo, CATIA, or similar)Experience with CAM workflows and digital manufacturing toolchainsAbility to independently plan, execute, and troubleshoot technical research tasksStrong experimental design and problem-solving skillsExcellent organizational and technical documentation abilitiesPreferred Qualifications (Strongly Desired)
Working knowledge across multiple advanced manufacturing domains (e.g., AM + CNC, or Robotics + Scanning)Experience operating research-grade manufacturing or automation equipmentBackground in applied research environments, R&D labs, or technology development centersExperience with:Digital twins or model-based engineeringSensor integration and process monitoringHybrid or multi-material manufacturing systemsRecord of peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, or patentsExperience contributing to or authoring grant proposals (e.g., DoD, NSF, SBIR/STTR)Familiarity with research transitioning from low TRL to higher TRL systemsWork Environment & Team Fit
