Starting Pay: $18/hour 


Description:

Working under the supervision of the Director of Youth Development Programs, the Afterschool Program Staff is responsible for implementing an educational program for grades K through 4 after-school programs. After

School Program Staff must ensure that all safety procedures are followed according to the MDI Y’s policies and procedures and direct and promote activities geared to meet the needs of the children in the program.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Duties and responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to, the following:

a) Plan, supervise, and implement program activities following the policies and philosophy of the MDI Y.


b) Plan and implement appropriate early childhood education experiences with a variety of materials in the fields of art, music, literature, science, math, etc.


c) Supervise and promote activities geared to meet the needs of the individual children and designed to enhance the healthy emotional, social, intellectual, and physical development of each child enrolled at the center.


d) Maintain daily open communication with parents. Communicate frequently with parents informally, with periodic notes and verbal communication as needed.


e) Maintain confidentiality and a professional attitude to the MDI Y at all times (e.g. keep confidential all appropriate records such as accident/incident reports, child behavior reports, and any anecdotal records).


f) Be responsible for the ordered arrangement, appearance, and program learning environment and any facility spaces used regularly or periodically.


g) Opportunities for additional hours at monthly Kids Night Out events and school-scheduled half days.


h) Follow the MDI Y Child Abuse Prevention Policy and guidelines.


i) Prepare approved nutritious snacks for all children in our care.


j) Meet all applicable licensing regulations.


k) Attend all required staff meetings and training.


l) Report any concerns, incidents, or accidents to the Director of Youth Development Programs immediately.


m) Create an atmosphere of Respect, Responsibility, Caring, and Honesty in all childcare programs.


n) Treat all children with dignity and respect. Be a positive role model at all times.


o) Other duties as assigned.



Requirements:

Qualifications & Requirements:

1) Professionally prepared (or willing to achieve formal training) as a teacher of young children, especially in the field of School Age Education or Development.


2) Have appropriate communication skills to deal with parents, children, and other staff.


3) Obtain CPR and First Aid certification within three months of hire.


4) Work toward achieving 18 hours of training per year.


5) Complete Child Abuse Prevention training and Basic Water Safety training.


6) Understand the importance of positive reinforcement as well as understand appropriate disciplinary measures.


7) Register in MRTQ (Maine Roads to Quality) within the first three months of hire.


8) Must be 16 years of age.


9) Must meet the MDI Y and Department of Human Services requirements.


Physical & Mental Requirements: Must be patient and able to make sound judgments for dealing with children in a timely manner on a daily basis. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands, and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands or arms and to stand, walk, balance, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
