Summary:

Job Title: Quality Control Inspector

The Quality Control Inspector is responsible for ensuring that sheet metal products meet specified quality standards, specifications, and customer requirements in a sheet metal fabrication shop. This role involves inspecting materials, components, and finished products, performing tests, and documenting results to maintain high-quality production standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspection of Materials and Products: Conduct detailed inspections of raw materials, in-process components, and finished sheet metal products to ensure compliance with engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Dimensional Verification: Use precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, and CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) to verify dimensions and tolerances.
  • Visual Inspection: Examine sheet metal parts for surface defects, such as scratches, dents, or weld imperfections, ensuring aesthetic and functional quality.
  • Testing and Evaluation: Perform non-destructive testing (NDT) methods, such as dye penetrant or magnetic particle testing, to identify material flaws or weld integrity issues.
  • Documentation: Record inspection results, maintain detailed reports, and log non-conformances using quality management systems or paper-based records.
  • Process Monitoring: Monitor fabrication processes, including cutting, bending, welding, and assembly, to ensure adherence to quality standards and procedures.
  • Non-Conformance Handling: Identify and report defective products, initiate corrective actions, and collaborate with production teams to resolve quality issues.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., AS 9100 and ISO 9001) and safety regulations.
  • Tool Calibration: Verify that inspection tools and equipment are calibrated and maintained for accurate measurements.
  • Continuous Improvement: Participate in quality audits, suggest process improvements, and contribute to reducing defects and waste in production.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification or associate degree in quality control, manufacturing, or related field preferred.
  • Experience: 1-3 years of experience in quality control or inspection, preferably in a sheet metal fabrication or manufacturing environment.
  • Skills: Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings, blueprints, and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
  • Familiarity with sheet metal fabrication processes (e.g., laser cutting, CNC punching, welding, forming).
  • Expertise in using precision measuring tools and equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Basic computer skills for documentation and reporting (e.g., Microsoft Office, ERP systems).
  • Certifications: Certification in quality control (e.g., ASQ Certified Quality Inspector) or NDT certifications are a plus.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and work in a shop environment with exposure to noise and metalworking processes.
