The Valley Railroad Company in Essex, Connecticut, is looking for an Audio/IT Installation & Maintenance Assistant for a 100-hour temporary contract. We need someone who can hyper-focus on the specifics of each installation, ensuring top-tier quality, and who is ready to work diligently until the job is done.

This position offers a unique level of independence and direct authority. You will be working directly for me, EJ Evans, Vice President of Valley Railroad, and will operate with the full authority and scope I provide. Your accountability will be solely to the 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, and the President of the Railroad


We value individuals who can follow instructions precisely and quickly grasp the concepts behind the equipment and tasks.

While extensive experience isn't required, you should have a good grasp of electrical fundamentals and an understanding of, or willingness to learn, commercial audio and video systems, lighting controls, and networking. Proficiency in concepts related to 70V and 100V commercial audio systems is key, as a significant part of the work involves our unique train fleet. Familiarity with concert/live venue sound equipment and general IT/business office machines is a plus.


Here's what you'll be doing:

  • Expertly installing flexible conduit and running audio cable throughout our train cars.
  • Integrating new amplifiers, speakers, and associated cabling.
  • Precisely terminating audio and speaker cables at all junctions.
  • Accurate installation and termination of RJ45, Cat 6 (or better) LAN cables.
  • Thoroughly testing all installed equipment to guarantee flawless operation.

This position offers non-standard work hours, dictated by equipment availability and the operational flow of the railyard. We're seeking a flexible individual who can adjust their schedule to meet project needs and show unwavering commitment.


Compensation & Potential


Starting compensation for this 100-hour contract ranges from $16.35 to $25.00 per hour, based on your electrical aptitude, your ability to understand complex systems, your skill set, and your collaborative spirit. While this is a temporary contract, there's a strong possibility of continuing on at the Valley Railroad in some capacity after your contract concludes. For the right person, crew housing may also be available for the duration of the contract.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

You'll be working in a dynamic and unique environment, including historic train cars (sometimes moving), directly on the rail, and inside and outside of station buildings and other work centers. We operate in all weather conditions and whenever equipment is available. This role requires physical capability; you must be able to stoop, bend, and lift 50 lbs overhead. You will also be responsible for carrying all your tools into the work area and removing them each day.
