Position_Description :

Job Overview

This shop mechanic position is in Maple Grove, MN and is full-time seasonal, with travel not likely. The shop mechanic will work around 10 months per year and have 2 months of seasonal layoff (most mechanics work 12 months). A normal work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8-12 hours per day with weekend work possible, and overtime is likely. This is a union, Operator Local 49 position.

Primary Responsibilities

  1. Perform maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on heavy-duty trucks, semi-trailers, pickups, skid loaders and other construction support equipment.
  2. Conduct thorough DOT inspections on trucks and trailers to ensure all equipment meets federal, state, and company compliance standards.
  3. Troubleshoot, repair, and replace hydraulic systems, including pumps, hoses, valves, cylinders, and fittings.
  4. Diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel emission systems including, DPF, DEF, SCR, EGR valves, sensors, and after-treatment components.
  5. Perform electrical diagnostics using scanners, multimeters, and wiring diagrams to identify and resolve electrical faults.
  6. Complete work orders accurately, documenting labor, diagnostic findings, and repairs.
  7. Maintain cleanliness and organization of the shop, tools, and service areas.
  8. Adhere to company safety procedures, PPE requirements, and OSHA-compliant work practices.
  9. Test-drive and operate equipment to verify proper functionality after repairs.
  10. Attend and participate in daily morning huddles as well as weekly safety meetings.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.


Work Environment

  1. There is constant exposure to various weather conditions typical in the states where the work is performed, including noise, dust, and other materials.
  2. The work environment is in areas where heavy equipment, power tools and traffic are present.
  3. There is exposure to heights up to 50 feet and depths of up to 80 feet in this construction work environment.
  4. Demonstrate or be corrected to 20/20 vision.


Physical Demands

The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The physical demands of construction workers will vary depending on the work environment and will often change in real time.

  1. The employee must be able to lift (including above shoulder or head), move, and carry up to 50 pounds frequently.
  2. Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to input information, handle, carry (with and without assistance), feel objects, tools (of varying size and weight), or controls.
  3. Frequently reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, bend, twist, crouch, or crawl, talk and hear, and taste or smell.
  4. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  5. Frequent exposure to high noise levels.

Position Requirements :

Required Qualifications and Skills

  1. High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  2. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  3. General knowledge of the heavy highway construction industry.
  4. General knowledge of heavy equipment operation, diesel engines, and hydraulics.
  5. Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations.
  6. Reliable Transportation.


Preferred Qualifications and Skills

  1. CDL Class A or B license.
