Position Summary

The Rigger Helper 3 is a skilled support role responsible for assisting in complex rigging operations, ensuring proper handling, lifting, and securing heavy materials and equipment within the shipyard and aboard vessels. This position requires a higher level of experience in rigging techniques, the ability to work with minimal supervision, and the capability to lead less-experienced helpers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced rigging assistance, including lifting and moving heavy equipment in confined spaces and at heights.
  • Convey precise instructions to crane operators and forklift drivers using hand signals, loudspeakers, or radios.
  • Assist in the installation and testing of complex rigging equipment such as cargo booms, portable davits, winches, and pad-eyes.
  • Identify the appropriate rigging gear, including cables, ropes, shackles, and pulleys, based on load weight and distribution.
  • Work closely with riggers and supervisors to execute safe and efficient material handling.
  • Perform pre-use inspections of rigging equipment and report any deficiencies.
  • Troubleshoot and assist in resolving rigging challenges as they arise.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA safety standards and company policies.
  • May act as a lead helper, guiding and mentoring junior rigging helpers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of 6 months of rigging experience in an industrial or maritime setting.
  • Strong knowledge of rigging techniques, equipment, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to operate and handle winches, grip hoists, pulleys, cables, and mooring lines independently.
  • Proficiency in giving clear and accurate hand signals to crane operators and other personnel.
  • Ability to perform equipment testing and assist in installation of rigging gear.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) credential.

Physical Requirements

  • Work is primarily performed aboard ships and in an industrial shipyard environment.
  • Exposure to fumes, irritants, welding/burning fumes, paints, oils, greases, cleaning solutions, noise, high heat, and humidity while wearing required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Frequent movement throughout the shipyard, including ascending and descending stairs, ladders, and ramps aboard ships and in confined spaces.
  • Ability to maneuver heavy equipment and boxes, weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and provide guidance to less-experienced helpers.
  • Exposure to rapid changes in microclimates and industrial processes while overseeing and supporting rigging operations.

Work Environment

  • This position involves working in various conditions, including shipboard environments, outdoor shipyard areas, and industrial settings.
  • Must be capable of working at heights and in confined spaces as required for specific tasks.
  • May be required to work extended hours, including weekends and overtime, based on operational needs.

Salary Information

$17.2 - $24.29 Hourly Wage
