Special Procedures - Registered Nurse


Austin Gastroenterology is seeking a Registered Nurse to assist with Gastroenterology Special Procedures.
Job Objective: Perform Manometry/pH testing, Video Capsule Endoscopy (VCE) and Fibroscans ordered by physicians. Ensures quality patient care throughout the patient experience
Scope of responsibilities and accountability:
• Practices within the scope of the Texas Nurse Practice Act and approved GIA policies and procedures.
• Assures quality patient centered care throughout the testing experience.
• Maintains positive working relationships with physicians, managers, and peers.
• Maintains work environment by performing proper and safe care and reprocessing of manometry, VCE and fibroscan equipment.


Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks:
  • Obtains patient consent for care and ensures patient confidentiality. Obtains and documents health history, information on chief complaint, vital signs, and health risk factors and assesses disease condition. Provides patient care based on practice guidelines, standards of care, and federal/state laws and regulations.
  • Executes prescribed treatments and medical interventions, administers prescribed medications, and monitors and documents treatment progress and patient response. Refers to/consults with physicians, other health providers, and community resources to prevent/resolve problems or concerns. Educates patients and families about health status, health maintenance, and management of acute and chronic conditions.
  • Documents patient assessment and intervention data using established medical record forms/automated systems and documentation practices.
  • Maintains/reviews patient records, charts and other pertinent information. Posts tests and examination results.
  • Responds to/refers incoming patient treatment-related phone calls.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Other duties as directed or assigned.Major activities and essential job functions:
  • Responsible for performing manometry procedures according to manufacturer guidelines. The procedures most commonly performed being esophageal manometry (HRM), 24 hr pH studies and BRAVO capsule placements via EGD at affiliated surgery centers
  • Responsible for uploading reports generated by the HRM, 24hr pH and Bravo software into the EMR
  • Responsible for the performance of Fibroscan tests for patients and uploading report data to the EMR
  • Responsible for administering Video Capsule Endoscopy (VCE) to patients via routine outpatient appointments or via EGD placements at affiliated surgery centers
  • Responsible for downloading VCE studies onto the company’s shared drive, previewing the studies to look for pathology and sending tasks to the VCE reading physicians via EMR
  • Tests equipment prior to procedure to ensure it is working properly.
  • Properly cleans and disinfects/sterilizes all equipment and accessories used during procedures following manufacturer's guidelines
  • Ensures test results are reviewed by physicians in a timely manner
  • Responsible for protecting confidential and/or privileged information (PHI) according to company policy.
  • Adheres to infection control principles and applies universal precautions according to national standards.
  • Accurately & thoroughly document all patient encounters in the EMR
  • Uses clinical judgment based on nursing skills acquired through formal and informal experiential knowledge and evidence-based guidelines to globally assess the patient's situation and through critical thinking and clinical decision making, develop an appropriate plan of care for the patient, with the aim of promoting comfort
  • Accountable that patient care meets standards of safety, effectiveness, patient rights
  • Develop "super-user" level expertise in the use, care and maintenance of manometry equipment and devices
  • Perform motility procedures independently
  • Clean and inspect motility equipment for wear & tear and performance prior to each use
  • Accurately & thoroughly document all patient encounters in the EMR
  • Maintain neat and professional demeanor
  • Maintain neat and organized work area.
  • Restock supplies daily or as needed

  • Position Qualifications:
    • Graduate of an approved School of Nursing, with current license to practice as an RN in the state of Texas
    • 3-5 years of Hospital based or out-patient nursing practice required
    Med surg, ER or ICU experience preferred
    • Special training and/or experience in fibroscan, video capsule endoscopy and/or manometry procedures preferred.
    • Current BLS certification
    • Effective communication and listening skills.
    • Ability to communicate with diversified levels of patients, staff members and management
    • Ability to organize work material and charts to ensure accuracy of patient records.
    • Ability to work independently, establish priorities and proceed with objectives
    Ability to handle and resolve problems
    Adhere to all infection prevention initiatives (i.e., hand hygiene, proper disposal of waste, etc.)
    Regulatory Requirements/Risks/Exposures:
    • Works with chemicals including, but not limited to, chlorine bleach, glutaraldehyde, 2% accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide, multi-enzymatic instrument detergent
    • Physical demand requirements meet those defined as HEAVY work, exerting 50–100 pounds of force occasionally, 25–50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 1–20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
    On-going Job Expectations & Competency:
    • In addition to the above, on-going job expectations are as follows:
    • Maintain CEUs for licensure
    • Orient to new procedures and equipment as needed
    • Responsible for maintaining BLS.
    • Complete annual GIA education & training modules as assigned

    Qualifications
    EDUCATION: RN degree. Completion of nursing training from an accredited school of nursing. BSN preferred.


    EXPERIENCE: Minimum of one year professional nursing experience, clinic and gastroenterology experience preferred.


    REQUIREMENTS: Current state registered nurse license. Current CPR certificate.

  • Skill in initiating appropriate crisis interventions and emergency response calmly and effectively.
  • Skill in patient triage in person and on the phone.
  • Skill in preparing/maintaining records, writing reports and responding to correspondence.
  • Ability to analyze options and then counsel patients and families about choices and make referrals to other providers and resources.
  • Ability to read and interpret physicians’ orders and notes from other providers.
  • Ability to calculate and administer drug dosages and injections and measure results.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
