Nurse Substitute
KeenLogic is seeking a Nurse Substitute to join our team at the House of Representatives Childcare Center on Capitol Hill. The purpose of the House Childcare Center (HRCCC) is to provide full-day, year-round quality childcare for children of the Members of the House of Representatives, their staff, and House support personnel.

The Nurse Substitute provides essential health and safety support to the House of Representatives Childcare Center (HRCCC), ensuring the well-being of children in a secure and professional childcare environment. This role supports both planned extended absences and short-term coverage needs, delivering medical care, emergency response, and health oversight in accordance with established policies and regulatory standards. The ideal candidate is calm under pressure, highly organized, and committed to maintaining a safe and healthy environment for children and staff.

This position provides staffing support for both planned extended leave (such as parental or medical leave) and short-term, on-call coverage needs. Assignments may be full-time (40 hours per week, Monday–Friday) for defined periods, or short-term based on operational needs. Shifts are scheduled within operating hours (8:00 AM – 6:30 PM) and consist of 8 working hours with a 1-hour unpaid lunch break. Some roles may require availability on short notice.

Required Qualifications 
  • Must be a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), or Registered Nurse in any region within the Unites States. License must be active and valid.
  • HIPAA training and understanding of confidentiality obligations.
  • Prior experience in pediatric or childcare health settings preferred.
  • Ability to maintain organized health records and handle emergency situations calmly.
  • Be able to secure and maintain Federal Government security checks as deemed appropriate.
  • Ability to regularly lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical activities such as bending, stooping, kneeling, walking, pushing, and pulling throughout an 8-hour shift.
  • Experience with providing routine medications, as needed emergency medications, and administer first/CPR.

Job Expectations
  • Provide routine health checks and administer first aid as needed.
  • Monitor children for signs of illness or injury and respond appropriately.
  • Maintain organized and accurate medical records in compliance with HIPAA Privacy Rule (protecting individually identifiable health information).
  • Communicate health concerns promptly to HRCCC leadership and parents, where applicable.
  • Be prepared to handle emergency medical situations and follow established protocols.
  • Ability to proactively observe emerging needs and willingness to take initiative without directives.
  • Ability to maintain consistent and reliable attendance required. Flexibility with scheduling as needed.

Description of Work
  • Conduct health screenings when necessary.
  • Assess and stabilize children in urgent situations until emergency services arrive.
  • Provide guidance on hygiene and preventive health practices.
  • Contact families about symptoms requiring exclusion, and guidelines for return. Send notification of contagious illness to appropriate parties as designated by policy. Track contagious illness occurrences throughout the Center over time.
  • Maintain pharmacological knowledge and oversee administration of medication. Demonstrate medication administration for all necessary classes of medications including nebulizers, oral medications, intramuscular medications.
  • Administer emergency medications such as an Epinephrine autoinjector during anaphylactic episodes.
  • Supervise special health care and food/nutrition plans, and any accommodations necessary to serve children with special needs. Arrange care plan meetings with families and classroom teachers and support classroom teachers with implementation of plans. Work with teachers to ensure all health needs of children are met for field trips.
  • Inform administration of unusual problems and unanticipated constraints of resource requirements in a timely manner. Monitor usage and inventory levels of all clinic supplies and materials, and advise.
  • Administrators of related needs and issues.
  • Conduct regular comprehensive indoor and outdoor health and safety assessments and on-going observations of the childcare facility. Ensure compliance with cleaning and sanitation guidelines, handwashing procedures, and other health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally orally and in writing.
  • Continually remain calm in challenging situations. Utilize developmentally and situationally appropriate behavior management and communication techniques.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
