About this position

The Augustana Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry is pleased to announce applications for Summer 2025 Stockroom & Laboratory Assistants. Positions are full-time (up to 40 hours per week), over a 10-week period; compensation is provided on an hourly basis at a rate of $12.50 per hour.

Duties for this position are split between work in the Chemistry & Biochemistry Stockroom (under the supervision of the Stockroom Manager) and summer laboratory courses (June CHEM 116 and July CHEM 145, dependent on enrollment).

Stockroom duties may include:

(1) preparation of chemicals and solutions

(2) inventory of Departmental chemicals, equipment, and glassware, and

(3) miscellaneous tasks as needed by the Department.

The duties of summer Laboratory Assistants may include:

(1) provide general help and guidance for students conducting laboratory procedures,

(2) assist the course instructor with setup and teardown of the laboratory each week,

(3) monitor and respond to incidents involving laboratory safety, and

(4) assist with grading of student work.

Summer assistant applications are considered on an annual basis, and students are required to reapply each year. The number of positions filled each year is dependent on Departmental need & the availability of funds, and varies from year to year.

Hours Per Week:

This is a full-time position that is paid on an hourly basis ($12.50 per hour). While exact time obligations may slightly vary day-to-day and according to assigned tasks, positions are expected to require up to 40 hours per week.

Working Conditions:

This position will primarily be performing their duties in a laboratory setting,
including instructional laboratories, Department instrument rooms, and the stockroom. In accordance with campus and Department policies, work in laboratories will require the use of personal protective equipment (e.g. goggles, gloves, etc.). Depending on Department need, some duties may need to be
performed outside the laboratory (e.g. grading, etc.).

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • May require physical labor/lifting.
  • The ability to work in a laboratory setting with preparing and working with chemicals is necessary.

Evaluation Criteria

Eligibility: This application is open to students in good academic standing in their freshman, sophomore, junior or senior years. Out of necessity, applicants must have completed at least one CHEM course with a laboratory component (CHEM 116 or above). The Department is happy to consider applicants that have completed one or more CHEM courses, regardless of declared major.

Coursework: Applicants are required to provide a list of CHEM courses that they have completed with a grade of C- or better. Prior to making offers, the Department consults with the instructional faculty to obtain evaluative recommendations for the position.

Application Procedure

  • Interested applicants must fill out the application form by 3:00 pm on April 18, 2025.
  • Employment offers will be extended to individual students in mid-April.
  • All summer stockroom & laboratory assistants are required to attend Safety Training in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, which is typically held on/around the first day of summer research & assisting in late May/early June. Further information on this event will be communicated with incoming laboratory assistants in early May.
