POSITION SUMMARY

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is a multi-skilled health professional who works interdependently with other health care professionals to provide quality health care to the patient. The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) will be responsible for performing both administrative and clinical skills in the surgery department. The CAN will perform all patient care duties under the direction of the supervisor of the surgery department and other nurses within the surgery department.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • Nursing Assistant certification required.
  • Knowledge of basic direct patient techniques, medical terminology and documentation skills demonstrated.
  • One year experience preferred, but not required.
  • Current BLS card

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Position-Specific Performance Measures:

  • Pre-registration and pre-operative admission/preparation of surgery patients. Assisting pre-operative RN with all phases of surgical patient visit; measuring and recording vital signs, including pain level as indicated, assisting with specimen collection, dressing changes, bandage application, other procedures as deemed competent, as well as needs of the patient and family members; utilize Basic Life Support when required 
  • Coordinating pre-operative appointments for surgery patients, scheduling patients for pre-operative tests. Completion of pre-operative orientation for patients and giving pre-operative instructions to patients, coordination of all phases of surgical visit. 
  • Assisting with completion of medical records and billing for all surgical patients; performing accurate, legal, professional, and ethical documentation of all patient care activities at all times. Maintaining strict confidentiality, adhering to all HIPAA guidelines. 
  • Assisting with ordering of supplies for surgery department, cleaning of surgery rooms, terminal cleaning of surgery rooms, decontamination, cleaning of surgical instruments and disposing of biohazard waste according to OSHA standards. 
  • Communication skills using appropriate medical terminology and participation in quality and performance improvement activities department and organization wide as well as various duties as assigned by surgery manager within scope of practice. 
  • Demonstrates effective communication with members of the health care team to achieve desired outcomes; checks CMC email at least once per assigned shift and responds appropriately’ attends and participates in all required in-service training and mandatory meetings.
