Equipment includes, but is not limited to, cylindrical, mortise, and rim locks, motor and manually driven detention equipment, mechanical and electrical locks, including those operated by magnetic strip, keypad, proximity reader and remote control. Maintains computerized monitoring systems, key issue records, encoding key cards and electronic locking systems.<br> <br><strong>Distinguishing Characteristics </strong> <br><br>This is a job classification within the Skilled Trades job family. This classification is distinguished by experience and the ability to perform skilled journey locksmith level work. This classification may require work in secure facilities. This classification may require a flexible work schedule in order to meet the needs of the department.
<ul style="margin-bottom: 3pt;"><li>Plans, installs, services and tests mechanical and electronic locking, control, intercom and video surveillance systems. Makes emergency repairs to detention and security locking and intercom systems.</li><li>Opens, repairs and changes the combination of all types of locking devices and makes keys for same.</li><li>Determines the correct locking system to install based upon facility requirements. Estimates time and material costs on proposed projects. Completes requisitions for materials and equipment for key installations and engraving.</li><li>Procures and stocks material for bench stock. Maintains inventory of all lock and detention-related hardware for use by maintenance staff. Trains other maintenance staff to make simple repairs of locks and detention systems.</li><li>Repairs and maintains all types of doors, door closers, exit devices, panic hardware and related hardware.</li><li>Compiles and updates a confidential log of system codes. Operates manual key coding/cutting machine. Logs keys that are issued and returned.</li><li>As directed, assists other staff with building maintenance tasks, such as plumbing, electrical or other essential building functions.</li><li>Attend training and certification courses as needed and as required by the Department, in order to maintain certifications and skills necessary to perform the job.</li><li>Performs other job-related duties as assigned.</li></ul>
<strong>Education and Experience</strong>:<br>High School diploma or G.E.D. AND five (5) to seven (7) years of increasingly responsible experience in the installation, repair and servicing of mechanical and electrical locking devices, security systems and/or detention systems;<br>OR,<br>Associate’s degree in an electronics, electrical or related technical field and three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in the installation, repair and servicing of mechanical and electrical locking devices, security systems and/or detention systems;<br>OR,<br>Any combination of education and experience that has been achieved and is equivalent to the stated education and experience and required knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this job.<br><br><strong>Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements:</strong><br>Valid Texas Driver’s License.<br><span style="color: inherit; font-style: normal; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px;" id="isPasted">Must pass a criminal background check for CJIS clearance.</span><br style="color: inherit; font-style: normal; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px;"><span style="color: inherit; font-style: normal; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px;">Applicants are required to successfully pass the background investigation, including fingerprint clearance.</span><br> <br><strong>Preferred:</strong><br>Three (3) to five (5) years of correctional or institutional experience.<br> <br><strong>Dependent on department or division employed, the following certifications may be required:</strong><br>Locksmith Certification with in 6 months of employment<br> <br><strong>Knowledge of:</strong><ul style="margin-bottom: 3pt;"><li>Locking and security equipment, including security alarms and surveillance systems.</li><li>Machines and tools, including their design, repair, and maintenance.</li><li>Principles and practice of leading staff.</li><li>Policies, practices, procedures and methods of assigned function.</li><li>Applicable safety practices and regulations.</li><li>Federal, State, Local and County applicable laws, rules, regulations and guidelines.</li></ul> <br><strong>Skill in:</strong><ul style="margin-bottom: 3pt;"><li>Repairing machines or systems using the needed tools.</li><li>Troubleshooting, diagnosing and performing maintenance and repair needs.</li><li>Reading and interpreting schematics and blueprints.</li><li>Proper and applicable safety practices, procedures and regulations.</li><li>Working with others, including on a team.</li><li>Both verbal and written communication.</li></ul> <br><strong>Ability to:</strong><ul style="margin-bottom: 3pt;"><li>Motivate, train and lead others.</li><li>Understand and precisely follow both verbal and written instructions and communicate in a concise and effective manner.</li><li>Safely and correctly apply building and equipment maintenance and repair techniques and operate tools and equipment.</li><li>Work independently and efficiently.</li><li>Manage time well and meet timelines.</li><li>Establish and maintain effective working relationships with County employees and officials, representatives of outside agencies, and the general public.</li></ul><br>
