Mental Health Kokua (MHK) is hiring a CIS Housing Navigator on Oahu to provide housing navigation and community-based outreach services through our Community Integration Services (CIS) program. This position supports adults experiencing behavioral health challenges and housing instability in securing and maintaining safe, stable housing.
As a CIS Housing Navigator, you will manage an active caseload, build landlord partnerships, remove barriers to placement, and help individuals strengthen long-term housing stability. This role is ideal for someone who is community-oriented, organized, and comfortable working independently in the field.
What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)
- Caseload Management: Manage a caseload of approximately 30 individuals receiving housing navigation services.
- Client Engagement: Meet with each client at least four times per month to identify goals and reduce housing barriers.
- Landlord Relations: Build and maintain relationships with landlords, property managers, and housing providers.
- Housing Placement Support: Assist with applications, lease paperwork, move-in coordination, and housing readiness.
- Stability Coaching: Support clients with budgeting, lease responsibilities, and maintaining housing stability.
- Motivational Strategies: Apply motivational interviewing and harm reduction approaches to encourage engagement.
- Community Collaboration: Coordinate with case managers, behavioral health providers, and the Continuum of Care (CoC).
- Documentation & Reporting: Accurately document services in HMIS and NextStep and track placement and retention outcomes.
CIS Housing Navigator Qualifications
Minimum:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Three (3) years of experience in human services, case management, or housing support
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Human Services, or related field
- Experience supporting individuals with behavioral health needs or housing insecurity
- Familiarity with HUD housing programs, landlord engagement strategies, and HMIS data systems
Skills:
- Strong communication, negotiation, and advocacy skills
- Ability to build trust with clients and professional relationships with landlords
- Knowledge of tenant rights, housing barriers, and local housing resources
- Ability to work independently in community-based settings
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and electronic documentation systems
Fit for the Role:
- Comfortable providing field-based outreach and supporting adults navigating housing instability and behavioral health challenges
Requirements & Work Conditions
- Ability to pass a criminal background check and drug/alcohol screening
- Valid Hawaiʻi driver’s license with clean driving record
- Reliable vehicle with current registration, safety inspection, and insurance
- Current CPR & First Aid certification
- Current TB clearance or TB X-ray (two-step TB clearance if applicable)
- Regular travel within Oahu to community sites, housing providers, and client meetings
