Youth and Recreation Worker (Term: Up to March 31, 2025)

About this position

The Youth & Recreation worker is responsible for developing programs for the Gingolx Memorial Recreation Center. The program will work with and support young people aged 0 - 29, Elder’s, Men & Women, either individually or in groups, by developing and facilitating program needs through recreation, training, fitness, health and wellness.


Duties:

  • Fulfill the Youth and Recreation work plan for 2024/2025
  • Develop programs to implement in the Community with all ages – Main Gymnasium, Outdoor Sports, Fitness Center, Health and Wellness Initiatives.
  • Seek and apply for grants, submit proposals and funding requests to enhance program opportunities
  • Assist Brighter Futures in partnership events as required
  • Provide guidance and role modeling to the Youth & Adults
  • Oversee the Fitness Room – membership, cleanliness and implementation of user guidelines
  • Plan and organize activities such as sports, camps, workshops, training, health, fitness and wellness initiatives
  • Work with outside agencies in developing fitness programs for health and wellness
  • Maintain daily, monthly attendance for all programs
  • Submit monthly reports and statistics to supervisor on program outcome
  • Maintain daily sales of membership with point of sale system.
  • Ability to motivate youth/adults and handle various conduct
  • Ability to work with general public and liaise with parents
  • Must be able to function under fast paced and noisy conditions
  • Maintain a strong team working relationship with the Departments of GVG
  • Other duties as required as per job description or assigned by Director

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of the philosophies, objectives, and practices of community recreation programs.
  • Considerable knowledge of the social, cultural and recreational needs for people of all ages and abilities.
  • Considerable knowledge of sports, outdoor, social, art and cultural pursuits related to various program offerings.
  • Good knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to exercise independence of judgment and initiative and to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to communicate with courtesy and tact in order to obtain and/or distribute routine data or information to internal and external customers. This may involve the ability to probe for information and clarification.
  • Ability to gain community participation in programs and events.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years recreation programming experience in a variety of recreation delivery areas or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience coordinating youth and adult programming is an asset
  • Previous experience in granting writing, proposal and funding requests is an asset
  • Strong and practical understanding of youth development principles, techniques and resources.
  • Must possess excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must possess strong team, networking, and group collaboration abilities.
  • Criminal Records Check clearance upon hiring.
  • Possession of a valid Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certification
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence with access to private transportation.
  • Position is subject to extension of full-time based on evaluation at the end of term.

Monday - Wednesday 1 pm – 4:30 pm & 6 – 9:30 pm
Thursday – Friday 1:00 – 4:30 pm & 7 – 10:30 pm
Saturday's 1 – 5 & 6-9 (alternating with Monday's)
