About this position


 

The Directional Drill Operator is responsible for operating horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment to install underground fiber optic and conduit systems for telecommunications projects. This role requires a strong understanding of drilling operations, underground utility safety, and coordination with the drilling crew to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient installations.


Key Responsibilities

  • Operate horizontal directional drill rigs and support equipment safely and efficiently

  • Perform bore planning, setup, drilling, reaming, and pullback operations

  • Read and interpret utility locates, bore profiles, and construction plans

  • Maintain proper bore depth and alignment to avoid existing utilities

  • Coordinate with locator to ensure accurate tracking and adjustments during drilling

  • Conduct daily equipment inspections and basic maintenance

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety policies

  • Assist with potholing, cleanup, and restoration as required

  • Complete required job documentation and production reports

  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and terrain


Qualifications & Requirements

  • 2+ years of directional drilling experience (telecom or utility preferred)

  • Experience installing fiber optic conduit, duct banks, or telecom infrastructure

  • Strong understanding of underground utility locating and damage prevention

  • Ability to read prints and follow bore plans

  • Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred (or willingness to obtain)

  • Ability to lift 75–100 lbs and perform physical labor as needed

  • Comfortable working long hours, overtime, and traveling to job sites


Preferred Certifications

  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30

  • HDD Operator certification (Vermeer, Ditch Witch, or equivalent)

  • First Aid / CPR

  • Confined Space or Trenching & Excavation (a plus)
