About this position
Job Summary: Provides indirect patient care in the office/clinic setting. Greets and registers patients. Verifies patient demographic and insurance information. Performs clerical duties. Meets the communication needs of the patient/family, office/clinic staff and the medical staff. Participates in performance improvement activities.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Registers all patients, gives new patients medical forms to complete.
- Verifies patient demographic, employment and insurance information.
- Explains billing policies, collects co-payments and procedures for self-pay patients.
- Schedules new and return appointments; explains registration process and gives directions to new patients; may explain procedure preparation to patients.
- Makes referral appointments to specialty physicians.
- Answers the telephone in a professional and courteous manner; takes messages; directs calls to appropriate staff members.
- Makes diagnostic testing appointments.
- Photocopies patient schedule sheets each day, prepares charts for new patients.
- Maintains daily patient log, referral and diagnostic logs.
- Collects payments and writes receipts.
- Maintains a good working relationship with office/clinic staff members and physicians.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Professional Requirements:
- Adheres to dress code standards; appearance is neat and clean.
- Completes annual education requirements.
- Maintains regulatory requirements, including all state federal and CMS regulations.
- Reports to work on time and is scheduled; completes work within designated time.
- Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized time system correctly.
- Completes in-services and returns in a timely fashion.
- Attends staff meetings; reads and returns staff meeting minutes.
- Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times.
- Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
- Communicates the mission, vision, core values, ethics and goals of the office/clinic.
- Actively participates in the department’s quality improvement CQI activities, attends committee and management meetings, as appropriate .
- Performs department in-services.
- Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, departments and staff.
- Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
- Ensure compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire, safety and infection control.
Regulatory Requirements:
- High School Graduate or equivalent.
- One year experience in office setting or hospital setting.
- Experience with billing and insurance preferred.
