Technician – Materials Testing and Field Inspection – Sausalito, CA


Position Summary:


Blackburn Consulting (Blackburn) is seeking a part- to full-time Materials Testing and Field Inspection Technician for our Sausalito Office. This technician will have experience with soils testing and field inspection for geotechnical engineering or materials testing companies. The Technician will be supervised by Blackburn’s Director of Construction Services and senior firm leadership. This candidate shall have at least 3-5 years of experience performing construction materials testing in accordance with ASTM, AASHTO and Caltrans test methods. This position will require travel to project sites and other testing laboratories.

Blackburn Consulting provides geotechnical, geo-environmental, construction, forensics and laboratory testing services throughout California with offices in Auburn, West Sacramento, Sausalito, Fresno, and Escondido. We have an extensive geotechnical and materials testing lab in West Sacramento, CA and additional lab capabilities in Sausalito, Fresno, and Escondido. We focus primarily on public works projects in the flood control and transportation market sectors.

Position Duties:


  • Timely documentation of all testing activities and construction observations 
  • Daily coordination with Agency and Contractor representatives 
  • Strict adherence to ASTM, AASHTO and Caltrans test methods 
  • Performance of duties in a safe manner in accordance with Company and project-specific health and safety requirements 


Essential Abilities:


  • Perform typical calculations associated with field tests 
  • Communication skills internally and externally 
  • Keep track of time spent on different projects and record time 
  • Ability to deliver a high-quality deliverable in a timely manner 
  • Flexible schedule 


Technical Qualifications:


  • High school degree 
  • 3-5+ years of relevant experience, public works preferred 
  • Valid driver’s license and personal vehicle 
  • Experience with standard computer operations (Windows-based systems). 
  • Certification by ACI, Nuclear Gauge, Caltrans, or NICET preferred 


Physical Requirements:


  • Ability to read, write, and speak English 
  • Ability to communicate clearly in person and over telephone 
  • Visual acuity to perform job duties 
  • Physical ability to bend, reach, stand, walk, sit, push and pull up to 75 lbs. of weight 
  • Must be insurable under company vehicle policy

Salary Information

$52000.00 - $83200.00 Annual Salary
