Position Summary
Camp Conowingo is seeking an experienced and energetic Kitchen Manager to lead food service operations during our seasonal sleepaway camp. The Kitchen Manager supervises kitchen staff, oversees meal planning and preparation, ensures food safety and sanitation, and maintains inventory and kitchen records. As a key member of the camp’s leadership team, this role helps set the tone for professionalism, safety, and positive community across camp.
Flexibility is essential at camp, and the Kitchen Manager should be comfortable adapting to changing needs while taking initiative and supporting overall camp operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise and support kitchen staff to ensure efficient, timely, and collaborative meal service
- Ensure adherence to food safety standards, preparation schedules, and dietary requirements
- Collaborate with camp leadership to plan balanced, nutritious menus accommodating dietary needs
- Oversee and assist with meal preparation and cooking for campers and staff
- Manage portion control to reduce waste and ensure appropriate servings
- Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen in compliance with all applicable regulations
- Ensure proper food storage, temperature control, sanitation, and record-keeping
- Monitor inventory and order food and supplies as needed
- Coordinate with camp staff to support special meals and events
- Assist with meal setup, service, breakdown, and clean-up of food service areas
- Provide input for food-related camp programs or activities when appropriate
- Communicate clearly with camp staff, volunteers, caregivers, and campers regarding meals and needs
- Conduct performance feedback and support professional growth of kitchen staff
- Manage administrative tasks, reports, and required documentation
- Model professionalism, teamwork, and positive leadership
- Adapt to changing needs with flexibility and a solution-focused attitude
- Participate in staff training, meetings, post-camp clean-up, and post-season review
- Uphold Volunteer Essentials, Maryland Youth Camp Regulations, and ACA standards
- Support all-camp events, including opening and closing day activities
- Prioritize excellent customer service and a welcoming dining experience
Time Commitment
- Seasonal position, Sunday–Friday
- Living on-site is optional; rustic housing available
- Includes paid staff training

Skills, Education, and/or Relevant Experience
- Minimum one year of commercial kitchen experience, including supervisory responsibilities
- Previous camp or youth-serving experience preferred
- ServSafe Food Manager certification required or willingness to obtain
- Knowledge of food safety regulations, sanitation, and dietary needs of children
- Strong leadership, organization, and time-management skills
- Ability to supervise staff and work effectively with campers and diverse groups
- Experience managing inventory and kitchen operations
- CPR and First Aid certification required or willingness to obtain during paid training
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Physical stamina for long, active workdays in a camp environment
- Ability to identify and respond to safety hazards and emergencies
- Must pass required background, fingerprint, and drug screenings
Salary Description
$2,900 - 3,500 stipend for 7 week camp season
