About the Role

As the Director of Safety, you will be the standard and enforcer of safety, setting the bar for safety practices across the entire company, including manufacturing facilities, R&D labs, and field operations. You will lead the development, execution and maintenance of comprehensive safety strategies, including creating a PPE matrix based on job function and work area, creating a visitor policy for the manufacturing floor, developing and enforcing a safety reporting policy, developing company specific training materials, facilitating safety training(s), overseeing safety onboarding for new hires, and driving safety training through custom programs or software solutions. Reporting to the Chief People Officer, you will ensure that our facilities comply with OSHA standards and other regulatory requirements while driving a proactive safety culture across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Enhance and improve existing Safety Programs: Build comprehensive safety policies tailored to our manufacturing, R&D, and field operations environments, with a specific focus on manufacturing equipment and electrical safety for systems up to 600Vac and 1000Vdc.
  • Create and enforce a Safety Write-Up Policy: Establish a clear policy for documenting a safety violation, near-miss, hazard, or incident. Ensuring consistency in reporting, and enforcing corrective actions. This includes:
  • Defining levels of violations (minor to severe).
  • Setting out consequences for non-compliance.
  • Tracking violations and implementing continuous improvement.
  • Coaching and providing corrective training when needed.
  • Map Specific PPE Requirements: Develop, maintain and implement a detailed matrix outlining PPE requirements by role and area within the facility, ensuring that signage and instructions are clear for all employees. Responsibilities include:
  • Mapping out specific zones on the manufacturing floor, with signage indicating required PPE.
  • Ensuring required PPE is available and accessible.
  • Creating clarity around PPE expectations for each role and task.
  • Regularly reviewing and updating the matrix based on process changes or regulatory updates.
  • Develop a company specific library of role-specific safety training along with a robust tracking mechanism to ensure current and new employees along with employees whose role may change, are properly trained and up to date on safe work practices specific to their work areas and job function.
  • Enhance the Visitor Safety Policy for Torus manufacturing facilities which outlines required protocols to ensure a safe environment for all business visitors and contractors, including host and visitor responsibilities, safety orientation and briefing requirements, visitor PPE specifications, a list of prohibited activities and items, and all necessary documentation.
  • Lead Safety Initiatives: Oversee safety initiatives around LOTO, PPE, hazard identification, and corrective/preventative actions.
  • Ensure OSHA Compliance: Stay up-to-date with OSHA standards, industry regulations, and best practices, ensuring compliance and identifying potential safety risks.
  • Conduct Audits & Investigations: Perform regular safety audits, inspections, and accident investigations, driving the implementation of corrective measures and any necessary reporting.
  • Drive Safety Culture: Promote a safety-first mentality, ensuring all employees understand the importance of safety protocols through training, education, and regular communication.
  • Collaborate Across Departments: Work closely with engineering, production, field operations, and other departments to integrate safety procedures into every aspect of our operations.
  • Support Onboarding of New Hires: Facilitate safety onboarding for all new employees, ensuring they are well-versed in safety protocols, PPE requirements, and hazard prevention from day one.


Required Experience

  • OSHA 30-hour certification required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practical experience with NFPA 70E standards, including electrical hazard identification, arc flash risk assessment, and implementation of safe work practices for electrical systems and equipment.
  • Proven experience developing safety training programs and implementing safety software solutions.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to set and enforce high standards, and to engage and train employees at all levels.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally with other departments.
  • Expertise in designing and enforcing safety protocols, including LOTO, PPE, and OSHA compliance.
  • 5+ years of experience leading safety programs in manufacturing environments, with a focus on high-voltage and electrical safety.


Preferred Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or related field; advanced certifications preferred (i.e. OSHA).
  • 10+ years of experience leading safety programs in manufacturing environments, with a focus on high-voltage and electrical safety.

Location Based in our South Salt Lake Headquarters Warehouse (air-conditioned). May require occasional onsite work in Springville R&D warehouse (air-conditioned and non air-conditioned).

Physical Requirements

  • Occasionally required to safely lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to don personal protective equipment to include, but not limited to, respiratory protective equipment with proper seal, coveralls, ear protection, gloves, eye protection & safety helmet.
  • Ability to observe, detect and respond to audible and visual machine malfunction warnings.
  • Ability to communicate information so others can understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Must report to work reliably and with the ability to use full and unimpaired skills and judgment to safely execute your job.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English required.
