Sr. Construction Manager - Electrical Transmission & Distribution

About this position

Seeking a high-energy, detail-oriented utility Senior Construction Manager with proven experience working as part of a high performing team of program managers, project managers, and financial analysts in support of complex electrical transmission and distribution construction projects. Ideal candidate will have at least ten years' experience constructing new and rebuilding existing electrical substation, transmission and distribution infrastructure projects. Expert at managing multiple stakeholders, coordinating several engineering workgroups, architects, sub-contractors, electricians, and technicians. This position involves primarily field deliverable activities, including oversite of construction at high voltage electrical substations, transmission/distribution lines, test facilities and corporate campuses. Focus and commitment to safety is paramount.

Successful candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills across all levels of the business environment, up to an including senior management. Ideal candidate will have experience working in a regulated utility or equivalent financial environment.

OVERVIEW

The Sr. Construction Manager oversees construction activities and resources responsible for the construction of utility infrastructure and related facilities, performed mainly by contracted vendors or union labor. They oversee electric construction activities to ensure construction standards, safety regulations, company policies/procedures, environmental requirements, and State/Federal regulations are met.

SUPERVISION LEVEL

  • Reports to the Program Manager and/or Team Lead. Work is highly independent and collaborative in nature

TYPICAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manages electrical and civil projects from conception through completion, ensuring all work is performed to standards, within budget, and on schedule
  • Responsible and accountable for overall project performance including, scope, quality, schedule, and innovation for the most complex and high-risk projects
  • Manage construction resources to maximize productivity, safety, quality, and cost savings
  • Monitor project performance and resolve engineering design issues, field barriers, and delays to maintain the project schedule
  • Serves as the primary communicator between project management, work groups, and key stakeholders on project issues
  • Leads job site walk downs and all meetings with engineering, construction, and personnel
  • Monitors project safety, performs weekly safety audits, verifies job briefings, conducts tailgates
  • Assists Root Cause Investigations, Apparent Case Evaluations, or other incident reviews
  • Possesses a strong knowledge of electrical schematics
  • Maintain relationships between the project managers, line managers, contractors and employees
  • Ensures project costs are managed, including development of recovery plan to stay within budget
  • Ensures project team members understand their respective responsibilities
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

A combination of experience, education, and/or training which substantially demonstrates the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Minimum of 10 years of transmission/distribution and substation construction experience in the electric power industry
  • Experienced in PLS-CADD, AutoCAD or other design software platforms
  • Expert at Bluebeam or similar document control tools
  • Proficient in use of MS Office suite such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and OneNote
  • Knowledge of MS-Project, Primavera (P6) or equivalent project planning tools
  • Experience with DPSS, CPD, and SAP highly desirable
  • Established track record with proven ability to work within a fast-paced corporate environment

EDUCATION & TRAINING

  • B.S. in Construction Management, Civil/Structural Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent field; equivalent experience and/or education with customer approval
  • Professional Engineer Certification (PE) desired

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills in day-to-day operations and under-pressure
  • Demonstrated ability to influence others and convey schedule deliverables in a concise manner
  • Ability to work both in a team environment and independently with minimal supervision
