Founded in 1969, the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) now has more than 36,000 members in more than 95 countries. Year-round programming includes the publishing of two highly regarded scientific journals, JNeurosci and eNeuro; professional development resources and career training through Neuronline¸ the Society’s home for learning and discussion; science advocacy and public policy engagement including annual Capitol Hill Day; and a variety of engaging public outreach efforts, led by the expanding and interactive collection of public-facing resources on BrainFacts.org. SUMMARY
The Volunteer Engagement Associate I plays a key role in implementing a portfolio of work that interacts with SfN’s hundreds of volunteers. The position works closely with the departmental management team to support vital volunteer management, recognition, and engagement initiatives focused on the volunteers that the Society relies on to make its work possible.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include the following.
- Execute the planning of the three Committee on Committees meetings throughout the year, which helps ensure SfN's committee structure and compositions support the organization's mission and strategic plan.
- Facilitate the planning of the Society's Nominating Committee to successfully create the annual election slate for each SfN Council position opening.
- Plan for the SfN's Past Presidents Meeting, Members Business Meeting, and other volunteer-focused meetings throughout the year.
- Execute the day-to-day implementation and documentation of annual Call for Nominations, Office and Councilor election, tiered perks program, presidential reception, holiday cards, and other volunteer management projects throughout the year.
- Maintain Standard Operating Procedures and identify opportunities for efficiency.
- Coordinates logistics for donation of materials to SfN’s archive.
- Maintain Volunteer Leadership section of SfN.org.
- Provide support to other departmental activities and serve as a back-up to the Operations and Volunteer Engagement Assistant in providing support for the Society’s Executive Director.
- Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree required; degree in non-profit management, hospitality management, or business administration preferred.
- Minimum 1-year professional experience working with non-profit or association volunteers or senior management staff.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong organizational, reasoning, and analytical skills.
- Very detailed oriented.
- Interpersonal skills with demonstrated poise, tact, and diplomacy.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks with various deadlines and set priorities.
- Ability to be discreet and confidential regarding work issues is essential.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced setting with shifting priorities.
- Must be a team player, energetic, and self-motivated.
Language Ability:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Math Ability:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage and to draw and interpret graphs.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, the incumbent should have knowledge of MS Office and experience with general database data entry preferred.

Work Environment
- Remote: Remote employees do not need to come into the office. Employees can work remotely in the DMV area as part of a 35-hour workweek with core hours from 10am-3pm Eastern time, and a reliable high-speed internet connection is essential.
