The City of Sandy Springs is seeking a Traffic Engineer to support the development and management of a safe and efficient multimodal transportation network. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to projects that enhance mobility, safety, and quality of life for residents, commuters, and visitors in one of metro Atlanta’s most dynamic communities.

 

Position Overview

 

The Traffic Engineer will assist in the planning, analysis, and implementation of traffic engineering projects and programs. This role provides direct exposure to a variety of engineering assignments, from safety studies to traffic calming and special event coordination. The successful candidate will apply technical knowledge while engaging with city leadership, partner agencies, and the community to ensure that transportation systems meet current and future needs.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support in the design, review, and implementation of traffic engineering and public works projects.
  • Conduct traffic capacity and operations analyses, safety studies, and field investigations.
  • Develop and evaluate plans for traffic control, signing, and striping in accordance with local, state, and federal standards.
  • Support the City’s Intersection Operations and Safety Program and Traffic Calming Program through data analysis, coordination with stakeholders, and preparation of engineering recommendations.
  • Assist with the review of traffic control plans for utilities, construction, special events, and land disturbance permits.
  • Prepare professional reports, technical memoranda, and responses for internal and external stakeholders, including elected officials, management, and the public.
  • Participate in public meetings as needed to present findings and support community engagement.

 

Schedule and On-Call Requirements

  • Standard work hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
  • Rotational after-hours, holiday, and emergency operations support required.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (transportation or traffic focus preferred).
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification required.
  • Valid Georgia driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.

 

Specific Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Knowledge and application of traffic engineering software including Synchro and HCS.
  • Knowledge and application of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Devices (MUTCD).
  • Knowledge and application of Civil WorkSuite or AutoCAD and ArcGIS.
  • Skill in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Skills in communication, both verbally and in written form including proficiency in spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment to complete a multitude of tasks.
  • Ability to use personal computer and software applications for creating spreadsheets, correspondence, presentations, reports, databases, etc.
  • Ability to obtain GA SWCC Level 1B certification within one year.
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) training.

 

Physical and Environmental Requirements

  • Ability to perform light to moderate physical work, including occasional lifting up to 20 pounds.
  • Regular fieldwork in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Extended periods of computer and desk work.
