Job Summary
The Job Cost Accountant is responsible for accurate tracking, analysis, and reporting of construction project costs throughout the project lifecycle. Reporting to the Financial Controller, this role partners closely with Project Managers, Operations, and Field Leadership to ensure proper cost coding, reliable WIP reporting, and proactive identification of cost trends and risks. The ideal candidate has strong construction accounting experience and proficiency in Viewpoint Vista, HCSS HeavyJob, or similar ERP systems.
Key Responsibilities
Maintain accurate job cost records across labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and indirect costs.
Review and reconcile job cost details for proper cost coding and alignment with project budgets.
Monitor cost-to-complete and support forecasting with Project Managers.
Identify cost variances and communicate financial risks and trends to leadership.
Support monthly job cost close, including accruals, adjustments, and WIP reporting.
Assist with preparation and review of progress billings, subcontractor billings, commitments, and purchase orders.
Support revenue recognition in accordance with GAAP.
Prepare and analyze Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and financial reports.
Resolve billing discrepancies in coordination with project teams.
Ensure compliance with accounting policies, internal controls, and contract requirements.
Support audits by providing reconciliations and job cost documentation.
Develop dashboards and automated reporting tools to enhance cost visibility.
Provide training to field and project staff on cost coding and job cost best practices.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (or equivalent experience).
3+ years of construction or job cost accounting experience (civil, heavy highway, or infrastructure preferred).
Strong understanding of job cost accounting, WIP reporting, and construction billing practices.
Proficiency in construction ERP systems (e.g., Viewpoint Vista or similar); HCSS HeavyJob experience preferred.
Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
High attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
