Youth Activities Department Description: Youth Activities provides engaging and enriching experiences for children and families through a variety of different programs. This department includes Kid City/Teen Clubhouse, a seasonal Bowling Center, and a Summer program known as Camp Columbia. This department is designed to create a safe, inclusive, and joyful environment where youth can learn, play, and grow.
Position Summary: The Camp Counselor will be responsible for supervising young children ages 4-7. Primary duties include ensuring campers learn, have fun, and are kept safe. Being committed, patient, energetic and maintaining a positive personality with campers and their parents are essential character traits of a Columbia Camp Counselor.
Reports To: Director of Family Activities and Family Activities Supervisor
Job Type: Full–Time, Seasonal (June – August)
Primary Duties and Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty consistently and efficiently.
• Demonstrate positive behavior, enthusiasm, and a commitment to the Club’s standards of conduct and Camp operation standards.
• Maintain open communication and build positive rapport with campers, parents, and team members.
• Be creative and energetic while leading/teaching diverse recreational and educational activities based on the weekly theme and rain day plans.
• Take initiative to adapt to different camper needs during transition periods and camp activities.
• Lead small groups of campers by fostering positive relationships, resolving conflicts, and ensuring everyone feels included.
• Enforce camp rules and respond to behavior concerns promptly and to Club standards.
• Administer first aid and take care of injuries as needed. Ensure the proper communication, reporting, and follow-up of care is performed.
• Stay alert and involved in all camp activities, assuring that the campers have fun while maintaining safety. Counselors are responsible for escorting campers around the Club based on the activity schedule.
• Assist with maintaining camp facilities and equipment cleanliness.
• Complete other tasks as requested by management.
Requirements:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required from the Camp Counselor.
• Proven experience as a Camp Counselor or similar role working with children is preferred
• Familiarity with various outdoor activities/ability to be creative with camp activities
• Must be reliable to work scheduled shifts and follow through with daily activity expectations.
• Strong organizational, time management, and communication skills
• First aid- and CPR-certified preferred
• Willingness to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts as required
• Must pass a background check or provide an underage working permit.
• Must provide proof of identity and employment authorization per federal I-9 requirements for new and re-hires.
• Capable of meeting the physical demands and responsibilities of the position, including long periods of sun exposure, standing, and quick movement around the work area. Should be able to periodically lift/move objects up to 20-35 pounds.
