Position Summary

The Firewatch Shipyard Helper is responsible for supporting shipyard operations by monitoring Hot Work activities and helping maintain a safe work environment. The position plays a critical role in preventing fires and ensuring compliance with shipyard safety procedures while assisting supervisors and team members in maintaining safe and efficient operations.

Essential Functions

• Monitor Hot Work activities to ensure compliance with established safety regulations, permits, and shipyard procedures.
• Maintain a safe work environment by identifying potential hazards and reporting unsafe conditions to supervisors or appropriate personnel.
• Conduct fire prevention inspections of work areas and surrounding spaces to detect combustible materials or other potential fire hazards.
• Remain alert during operations and respond to emergencies, assisting with the implementation of emergency procedures when necessary.
• Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and other shipyard personnel to support safe and efficient work operations.
• Other duties and overtime as assigned

• Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify potential safety hazards and unsafe conditions.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining awareness of surroundings.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
• Good verbal communication skills to effectively coordinate with supervisors and team members.
• Ability to work in inclement weather (cold, hot, rain, snow, etc.
• Must have basic organizational, time management, written and verbal communication skills
• Must have ability to maintain confidentiality and a professional demeanor
• Must adhere to ISO and OSHA policies established by FMSNA and have high values for safety awareness

Education and Experience 

• High School diploma, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
• Previous experience in a shipyard, maritime, or industrial environment preferred.
• Basic knowledge of fire prevention practices, safety procedures, and Hot Work activities preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
While performing job duties, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand or walk; use hands and arms to grasp, handle, manipulate, or feel objects and controls; stoop, bend, kneel, and crouch; and speak or hear. The employee may lift and/or move up to 35lbs regularly and up to 50lbs occasionally. Work is performed both inside and outside in varying environmental conditions, including heat, cold, wet, humid, dry, and arid climates. Frequent use of PPE is required to minimize noise exposure, moving machinery, weather elements, and other potential hazards, including the risk of injury.
