POSITION OVERVIEW:
Village for Vets is seeking a highly organized and self-motivated HR Generalist to manage and execute core HR functions to support our team. This role ensures compliance with employment laws, promotes a positive workplace environment, and contributes to the overall effectiveness of the organization. The ideal candidate will be mission-driven, detail-oriented, and experienced in nonprofit HR practices. Reporting to the Director of Operations and Compliance, this role is responsible for overseeing recruitment, onboarding, benefits administration, compliance, employee relations, performance management, and HR policy development. The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker with a hands-on approach.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Human Resources Management
· Serve as the primary point of contact for all HR-related matters.
· Develop, implement, and maintain HR policies and procedures in compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
· Maintain and update the employee handbook and ensure staff awareness of policies.
· Create and maintain salary bands for all employees
· Assist in planning and facilitating staff training and development initiatives.
Recruitment & Onboarding
· Manage full-cycle recruitment including job postings, screening, interviewing, and hiring.
· Coordinate and conduct new hire onboarding and orientation.
· Maintain accurate and up-to-date employee records.
Benefits & Leave Administration
· Administer employee benefits programs and serve as liaison with benefits providers.
· Manage open enrollment and benefits education.
· Coordinate employee benefits, including enrollment, changes, and communication with providers.
· Track and manage employee leave (PTO, CFRA, FMLA, etc.) and ensure compliance with applicable laws.
Employee Relations & Engagement
· Organize monthly all-staff meetings
· Promote a positive workplace environment through employee engagement initiatives.
· Provide guidance on employee relations issues and conflict resolution.
· Support performance management processes including evaluations and disciplinary actions.
Compliance & Reporting
· Ensure compliance with employment laws and organizational policies.
· Prepare and submit required reports and documentation for audits and regulatory agencies.
· Support payroll processing and collaborate with finance staff or external vendors.
· Ensure confidentiality and ethical handling of sensitive HR information.
Communication
· Collaborate with other departments to gather financial information.
· Communicate effectively with vendors and internal stakeholders.
COMPENSATION:
Starting compensation includes a competitive salary dependent on experience.

Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, or related field.
- 2+ years of experience in human resources or a related role.
- Strong knowledge of California labor laws and HR compliance standards.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Although not required, preferred candidates will possess:
· Bachelor’s degree in human resources or related field.
· Experience in nonprofit HR management.
