Job Description: Equipment Operator – Recycling Landfill

Job Summary

The Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment used in recycling and landfill operations. This role supports daily site activities including material handling, waste placement, cover application, and site maintenance while ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment such as loaders, excavators, dozers, compactors, skid steers, and forklifts in a recycling landfill environment
• Load, unload, sort, and move recyclable materials and waste in designated areas
• Spread, compact, and cover materials according to site procedures and environmental requirements
• Inspect equipment before and after use; perform basic preventive maintenance and report mechanical issues
• Maintain safe traffic flow and equipment spacing on the landfill or recycling floor
• Follow all OSHA, DOT, EPA, and company safety policies
• Assist with site housekeeping to maintain a clean, safe, and organized facility
• Communicate effectively with scale operators, spotters, supervisors, and other team members
• Respond appropriately to changing site conditions, weather, and operational priorities
• Complete required logs, inspection forms, and reports accurately and timely
• Perform other duties as assigned to support site operations

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred
• Minimum 1–3 years of experience operating heavy equipment, preferably in landfill, recycling, construction, or similar environments
• Demonstrated knowledge of equipment safety and operational best practices
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
• Strong awareness of safety hazards and environmental compliance

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in recycling, waste management, or landfill operations
• OSHA safety training or certifications
• Ability to operate multiple types of equipment
• Basic mechanical knowledge

Physical Demands

• Ability to sit, stand, climb, bend, and walk for extended periods
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
• Visual and hearing ability sufficient to operate equipment safely

Work Environment

• Outdoor landfill and recycling facility
• Exposure to dust, odors, noise, and heavy equipment traffic
• Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) required at all times
