POSITION SCOPE

Remember the Alamo Foundation is experiencing an exciting time of change, planning and growth. A new position for the organization, the Director of Development, will have overall responsibility for developing, implementing, and sustaining a comprehensive fundraising strategy that supports the mission and growth of the Alamo. This role builds meaningful relationships with individual donors, foundations, and corporations throughout the State of Texas and beyond. The Director will lead the ongoing capital campaign, major giving, annual campaigns, and planned giving ensuring alignment with the Alamos strategic priorities and values.
The position requires a high level of strategic vision, relationship management, and community engagement to advance the mission of the Alamo. The position is responsible for developing goals, strategies, benchmarks, and budgets with approval from the Chief Marketing Officer, and for monitoring the performance of personnel and expenses related to these activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for the overall planning, design, organization, and execution of effective programs for the ongoing capital campaign, annual giving, grants, trusts, estate planning, special campaigns, foundation and corporate relations, and stewardship.
Directly participates in cultivation and solicitation activities for individual, foundation, and corporate giving, special campaigns, and prospects at all gift levels.
Meet with prospective and current funders as needed and requested.
Designs, develops and participates in special projects such as fundraisers and cultivations events, in line with industry best practice expense ratios.
Ensures that the Development Department adheres to all legal regulations associated with fundraising reporting
Directs and manages support professionals to fulfill the departments mission
Provides direction and guidance in management of the donor database and maintenance of files of donors and potential donors.
Develops and implements planned giving programs.
With the Chief Marketing Officer and Board Members, establish revenue goals; identify, and secure necessary resources to implement the Development Plan (financial and third-party), and oversee development budget.
Evaluate results of fundraising efforts and prepare reports for the Chief Marketing Officer and Board; and adjust strategies on an ongoing basis.
Oversee the design, production, and distribution of all fundraising collateral materials, including standard proposals, reports, newsletters, email communications, giving opportunities, fact sheets, and all appropriate donor communications.
Oversee schedule of grant cycles, including visits, submission and proposal review dates, and the completion of proposals and progress reports.
Plan and implement multiple direct mail appeals annually, with a high degree of customization and emotional appeal.
Sets quarterly and annual development goals and works to meet or exceed expectations.
With Chief Marketing Officer, coordinate fundraising efforts with the Board of Directors and keep Board Members informed and up to date on development activities.
Prepares and defends annual development operations and staff salaries within budget constraints and operates within the approved budget.
Performs annual staff performance reviews and provides for the professional development of associates
Helps formulate, develop, and publicize donor recognition program.
Ensure that all donors are appropriately acknowledged in direct means through letters, as well as publicly in newsletters and other publications, on the website and on the Alamo grounds; ensure that donor privacy and confidentiality is respected according to the donors wishes.
Participate in staff meetings, board meetings and other organizational development activities.
Oversees all reporting requirements specified in grants and gift agreements.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises: Development Manager, Development Administrator
Interaction: Other staff, Board Members, donors, guests, volunteers, community members.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: 8+ years experience as a leader in development with demonstrated professional experience in general management, donor solicitation, and public relations, with demonstrated success in fund development, major gift cultivation, solicitation, and fundraising. Bachelors degree required. CFRE designation preferred. Experience supervising staff and volunteers required. Experience in working with Board Members preferred. Must be proficient in basic Microsoft Office products, including Word and Excel, and have a basic knowledge of donor database software.
Language and communication: This position requires a self-motivated, highly organized individual with superior communications skills. Must have demonstrated ability to write persuasively and positively motivate and influence potential donors. Ability to maintain client confidentiality and privacy. This position requires a team-oriented, collaborative individual with warm, professional interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of staff.
Leadership ability: Must be able to recruit and retain a high-performing team of development professionals with the necessary experience and skills to meet the fundraising objectives and goals set forth by the organization and approved by the Board.
Reasoning ability: Must be able to remain calm under high stress and communicate effectively with others. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations.
