BOILER OPERATOR
SUMMARY: To tend and maintain a high-pressure industrial oil, gas, or solid fuel automatic boiler and auxiliary equipment in an efficient manner within controlled standards. Overall responsibility for the operation of the Process Water System.
SHIFT: 12-Hour daytime position with a rotating schedule. Weekend work, holiday work, and on-call availability are REQUIRED.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Checks and maintains safe and efficient operations of high-pressure boilers and related equipment, including air compressors and fuel pumps.
2. Monitors gauges and computer printouts of machine performance, tends boiler controls and gauges; adjusts or repairs broken or worn parts. Periodically cleans boilers. Sets and adjusts controls to achieve desired performance.
3. Lubricates equipment and changes oil and filters.
4. Periodically checks water condition with test equipment and adds conditioning chemicals as required.
5. Checks and records emission control equipment and recorders.
6. Maintains required company records of boiler room operations. Sets up, checks, and replaces recording charts/tapes. Maintains log operations by shift.
7. Supervises associates during semiannual boiler cleaning.
8. Keeps boiler room and equipment clean and orderly.
9. Notifies supervisor of any potentially dangerous equipment, practices, or violations of safety procedures.
10. Performs bi-hourly security checks throughout the facility. Serves as the plant security guard.
11. Operates and maintains Process Water treatment operations, ensuring compliance with state and federal environmental protection limits.
12. Monitors and samples well on groundwater, on entry to the municipal system. Adjusts treatment levels when below-standard variances are detected. Obtains samples of water at the exit station of the plant.
13. Maintains good housekeeping of all assigned areas.
14. Follows all safety guidelines.
15. Any other duties assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions; extreme cold; extreme heat; high pressures with risk of possible burns, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud, which requires hearing protection. Has to work in confined spaces during semi-annual boiler cleaning.
Personal Protective Equipment required: Hearing Protection, Respirator, Safety Glasses/Goggles, Gloves, Hard Hat, Safety Shoes.
