Position Description: Under general supervision, the Building Inspector inspects new and existing buildings and structures to enforce
conformance to building, grading, and zoning laws and approved plans, specifications, and standards.

Position Responsibilities: 40.00% - Conducts inspections of commercial and residential construction or upgrading projects in order to ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations (e.g., inspects materials, methods, and construction quality; identifies code violations; etc.); reviews construction plans and zoning applications in order to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances; issues permits when plans are approved; conducts engineering technical inspections. 20.00% - Prepares and maintains records, reports, and other documentation related to the operation of the department. 15.00% - Remains current on changes in applicable codes and construction practices and makes recommendations to the Chief Building Official 10.00% - Provides information to the general public and contractors on building codes and interpretations of such codes, general construction problems and other building code related issues; receives and responds to complaints or inquiries from citizens, attorneys, government officials, and others regarding zoning ordinance issues and conducts inspections to ensure compliance with City zoning ordinances. 10.00% - Maintains contact with City personnel/departments, homeowners, contractors, builders, the general public, and various government agencies/officials to obtain or disseminate information; appears in court as necessary.Attends meetings and serves on committees, as directed; attends training and seminars, as directed.
Maintains required licensure or certification, if any.
Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable PERRP safety standards that pertain to essential functions.

Additional Information: QUALIFICATIONS:Completion of high school/vocational school education or equivalent (high school diploma or GED); two (2) or more years of related experience and/or training; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess a Level 3 Limited Commercial Inspector Certification (or Interim Certification) issued by the Ohio Board of Building Standards. Must possess a valid State of Ohio drivers license and must remain insurable under the Citys vehicle insurance plan.

INHERENTLY HAZARDOUS OR PHYSICALLY DEMANDING WORKING CONDITIONS:
Employee works in the vicinity of floor or wall openings, including attics and crawl spaces, elevated platforms, and/or runways; ascends and/or descends ladders, stairs, or scaffolds; works in an area in which the means of egress is or can be obstructed; has exposure to chemical compounds found in an office environment (e.g., toner, correction fluid, etc.); is exposed to environmental conditions which may result in injury from fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and/or poorly ventilated work areas; is exposed to possible injury from extremely noisy conditions above 85db (e.g., construction equipment); is exposed to possible injury from hazardous gases, chemicals, flammables, air contaminants, unclean or unsanitary conditions, electrical shock, explosions; exposed to possibly injury as a result of working with moving mechanical parts of equipment or machines; is exposed to possible injury as a result of falling from high places; works in or around crowds; has contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons or vicious animals or life threatening situations; has exposure to fire, hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy weather conditions; exposure to hazardous driving conditions; may be called out on second or third shift; this is considered light work and the employee must demonstrate the ability to perform the physical demands required of the position in accordance with the U.S. Department of Labors physical demands strength ratings.
In cases of emergency, unpredictable situations, and/or department needs, may be required to lift, push, pull, and/or carry objects heavier than D.O.L. strength ratings recommend.
