Position Summary
This position performs routine manual refuse collection work in the city refuse collection and disposal program. Works under direct supervision of a refuse collection driver; work is checked in progress and upon completion.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collects refuse on an established waste collection route.
- Loads papers, trash and garbage into packer truck.
- Hooks cable to dumpsters.
- Loads trash with a pitch fork.
- Operates compactor on packer truck.
- Sprays and washes trucks.
- Rides in truck to dump site and assists driver in unloading truck.
- Operates back blade.
- Leaves notices of refuse violations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to lift and carry heavy loads.
- Ability to perform strenuous manual labor.
- Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.
- Ability to get along with fellow employees and the public.
Education and/or Experience:
- Combination of training and work experience which demonstrates capability for performing assigned tasks.
- Possess a valid Florida driver’s license.
Environment &Physical Requirements
- Work requires considerable physical strength and stamina.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employees is regularly required to use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms.
- Employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear.
- Employee is occasionally required to walk over uneven terrain, sit, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
- Employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions (hot, cold, wet) for 8 to 12 hours per day.
- Employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration.
- Employee is occasionally exposed to airborne particles and fumes and caustic chemicals.
- The noise level in the work environment is sometimes loud in field settings and moderately quiet in office settings.
- Requires ability to physically push or pull independently (unassisted) 50 pounds between 800 and 1000 times per day.
- Requires ability to physically lift independently (unassisted) 50 pounds from the ground to waist height between 800 and 1000 times per day.
- Requires ability to physically get up and down from the cab of a commercial motor vehicle between 800 and 1000 times per day.
- Requires ability to physically bend at the waist and knees between 800 and 1000 times per day.
- Requires ability to ride on the outside of the truck while servicing residential customers in low MPH areas.
